Saving Montgomery Sole
Saving Montgomery Sole | Mariko Tamaki
A beautiful and offbeat novel from Mariko Tamaki, co-creator of the bestselling Printz Honor and Caldecott Honor Book This One Summer.Montgomery Sole is a square peg in a small town, forced to go to a school full of jocks and girls who don't even know what irony is. It would all be impossible if it weren't for her best friends, Thomas and Naoki. The three are also the only members of Jefferson High's Mystery Club, dedicated to exploring the weird and unexplained, from ESP and astrology to super powers and mysterious objects. Then there's the Eye of Know, the possibly powerful crystal amulet Monty bought online. Will it help her predict the future or fight back against the ignorant jerks who make fun of Thomas for being gay or Monty for having lesbian moms? Maybe the Eye is here just in time, because the newest resident of their small town is scarier than mothmen, poltergeists, or, you know, gym.Thoughtful, funny, and painfully honest, Montgomery Sole is someone you'll want to laugh and cry with over a big cup of frozen yogurt with extra toppings.

Ugh. So disappointing. If I didn‘t have to read it for a work book club, I would‘ve bailed after the second time it put me to sleep (pg 16).

Sarahreadstoomuch The main character is super judgey and angry and reads FAR younger than her supposed 16 years. This will not appeal to teens over 14. The only part I liked was when she stood up to the homophobic preacher. 5y

I made it to Cuba! The first book I read was Saving Montgomery Sole. It's a great YA book about a kid with lesbian moms who is dealing with anger at homophobia that is directed at her, her moms and her queer friends. Well written and thought-provoking about not getting pulled into hatred.

Bookwormjillk Cuba! Wow, enjoy! 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I just did not enjoy this book. I think part of the problem for me is that the main character acted way younger than her stated age of 16. I had her pegged at 13 tops, based on her behavior and inner thought dialogues. If she had been 12/13 years of age in the exact same story I would have enjoyed the book much more. The topics broached in this book are close to my heart, but I doubt the book would appeal to actual 16 year olds.

Sarahreadstoomuch This. Exactly. 5y

Great characters, interesting spin on the classic story of standing up for your friends and family.

First book of the year! A really sweet, engaging story about a girl with two moms trying to get through high school. I loved reading about her relationship to her moms; such a great story about queer family. Montgomery's interest in the unexplainable & supernatural was also very fun to read about.

Fulfills read harder challenge's #15: Read a YA or middle grade novel by an author who identifies as LGBTQ+.

Lindy I liked this too. Also, it is among the six books I read in 2016 that had references to trepanation. (Random weird fact.) 7y
cursetine @Lindy Ha! isn't it weird how that happens?? 7y

THIS BOOK WAS THE BEST. A contemporary realist YA novel with a diverse cast, a female protagonist, and no love story! YOU GUYS. I really loved Montgomery Sole and her family and friends, and I especially loved her fast tongue and sometimes quick temper. My favourite YA of 2016, maybe? So great!

I'd love to give this book to all the two-mom families I know. Their kids are little, for now, but they'll be teenagers someday...

This was what I wanted in a modern contemporary. The characters were genuine and the message was meaningful.
The little things got me too, like their reference to 'old movies'. These were movies I would consider classics, like Star Wars! It definitely had me laughing at that.

In which a girl with two mothers gets her hands on the Eye of Know, which means trouble for people she doesn't like. Not everything and everyone is transparent like that though. Took a bit to get into but a decent enough read.

Monty is an endearing character, a 16-year-old coping with mean girls and rude boys, making mistakes and finding forgiveness. I liked this a lot. Her parents are caring and in the forefront (rare in YA) and they are also lesbians (rare in any novel). #diversebooks #queerbooks

The Portable Veblen + Saving Montgomery Sole: two books read weeks apart, both talk about drilling holes into skulls. Trepanation. For emergency medical treatment in the first case, to improve psychic powers in the second. Hmmm.

Lindy P.S. Came across a third literary reference to trepanation shortly afterwards, in Joe Hill's The Fireman. 8y
Lindy And 3 months later, another one! This time to heal a Mexican teen with severe head trauma in 8y
Lindy What is it with drilling holes in people's heads this year? Just read another one: 7y
Lindy Another mention: "dubious antique medical practices like trepanation - drilling a hole into one's skull to let out evil spirits" is from 7y

I'm not sure what I expected, but great exploration of high school life, sisters, friendship, & LGBTQ issues. Being a teen can be bad enough but having two moms -- even in California -- can make you stand out & be marginalized. But has our heroine actually marginalized herself? 👍 audiobook too

So I spent most of this book hating Monty because she was kind of a self-absorbed ass. I was prepared to dislike the book because of it and rate it down. But then the ending redeemed her and the book. So a good read in the end.

Mixed feelings on this one. It comes together pretty well in the end, but Monty is a really angry character and for most of the book you aren't sure if you're supposed to be sympathetic or if she is supposed to be out of line. Full review: http://goo.gl/FdDURZ
