Happy book birthday to Eric Smith! His new YA book DON‘T READ THE COMMENTS is finally out in the world. Eric is also returning to Richmond this Saturday at Fountain Bookstore. He‘s a great writer and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. If you‘re near RVA on Saturday, don‘t miss this event. I have a personal connection to this book that I‘ll share later this week. #BookBirthday #bookrelease #YA

While the first two books in the “Mortal Coil” trilogy are told almost entirely from Cat‘s POV, I‘m glad to see THIS VICIOUS CURE starts by giving Cat and Jun Bei equal time. That Emily is giving the reader a chance to see things through Jun Bei‘s eyes provides an interesting chance to learn more about her than the first two books allowed. #ThisMortalCoil #EmilySuvada

Okay, Littens. My preorder for THIS VICIOUS CURE was estimated to arrive on Tuesday. Still not here. 😾 Is this normal with preordering a book? It sat in a UPS place in Reno, NV, for about five days before moving to the east coast. Now, it‘s sat in a Richmond post office for two days. WTF? #PreOrderBlues #StillWaiting

If you‘re near Richmond on Saturday, don‘t miss the book release party for Lamar Giles‘ latest novel. You can catch Lamar with Meg Medina at the Main Richmond Public Library on Saturday at 2pm.

NOT SO PURE AND SIMPLE is Lamar‘s first contemporary YA novel (most of his previous YA books are mysteries). It‘s about “the consequences of societal pressure, confronts toxic masculinity, and explores the complexity of what it means to be a ‘real man.‘”

Another Book Birthday I‘m giving a shoutout to is Emily Suvada‘s THIS VICIOUS CURE, the conclusion to her “Mortal Coil” trilogy. I‘m eagerly awaiting the arrival of my copy in the mail...hopefully, later today. Been anticipating this book for more than a year now. If you haven‘t yet gotten into Emily‘s sci-fi trilogy, then now is the time! #BookRelease #BookBirthday #youngadult

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘ve been really curious about this trilogy! 7d
BillBlume @JanuarieTimewalker13 it‘s absolutely worth checking out. I‘ll confess that the amazing cover art by Regina Flath is what initially caught my attention, but after reading the first chapter in THIS MORTAL COIL, I was hooked. Emily really knows how to work a plot. 7d

I‘ve considered bailing on this book (I‘m never gonna finish it within my 14-day loan from the library), and I groaned when I read this conversation just 35 pages into the book. This seems like Morgenstern holding up a sign that says, “This book won‘t answer many questions & will leave you wondering WTF you read when you finish.” I don‘t mind the warning. If that‘s the case, this seems like a smart move on her part to prepare reader expectations.

Kimberlone Having recently finished the book (and felt very unsatisfied with the experience), I‘d say your interpretation of that quote is spot on 2w

Parts of this book made laugh and nearly cry. I wanted to rage and, other times, celebrate. Milicent‘s story—how men tried to erase her from Hollywood history—not only mirrors O‘Meara‘s trials within the entertainment industry today but women everywhere. It‘s a great book, and I can‘t wait to read O‘Meara‘s next book GIRLY DRINKS when it comes out.

Oh, wow! This really speaks to me. As someone whose parents once tried to tell my son behind my back “He‘s wasting his time” writing... Yeah, I get this. I share Mallory‘s anger for Milicent regarding this.

Love this caption Mallory O‘Meara gives this photograph. Throughout this book, she does a great job celebrating Milicent‘s beauty without making it all about her looks or judging her for the importance Milicent placed on this.

I think this paragraph really gets to the heart of what this book is really all about. Reading about Milicent‘s struggle within the film industry mirrors Mallory‘s and the struggle almost every woman encounters when trying to carve out a place where misogyny remains rampant.

I‘m still reading LADY FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, and Mallory O‘Meara does such a great job writing in a conversational voice. When she details the voice acting career of one of Milicent‘s romantic relationships, she made me laugh as she explains he voiced the notorious “wolf whistle” from “Red Hot Riding Hood” that now lives on more as a gif. When I say, O‘Meara is the kind of person I‘d like to hang out in a bar with, it‘s not an exaggeration.

I love this middle grade series by Victoria Schwab. The first book really blindsided me when I bought it at an event for her other novel VENGEFUL. This book is wonderfully fun with a clever dose of dark. Schwab manages to raise the stakes in this sequel and even drops a hint at where the third book will take things. Schwab is so damn good.

Borrowed this book a few nights ago from the library. Honestly, the first 15 pages are a steaming pile of what-the-fuckery, BUT the twist Morgenstern takes after that... I don‘t think she could achieve that moment without everything before it. Still not sure this is a book I will enjoy, though. Feels weak on plot, but mad strong on beautiful language, so much so, you almost don‘t realize she writes about someone‘s tongue getting burned out.

I love how Mallory O‘Meara discovers that Milicent worked on the very animated film (the sequence with the Chernabog in “Fantasia”) that inspired much of her own love for horror films. Really enjoying O‘Meara‘s journey in this book.

East Of West Vol. 4 | Jonathan Hickman
post image
Pickpick

Hickman does a great job juggling all the pieces of this story, but it‘s starting to get so big that single issues can‘t move a lot of the story. That might prove an increasing problem with future volumes in this series. This is the first volume that I almost considered rating it as “so-so,” but I still think it gets enough right to be a “pick.”

So, in an ambitious move, I‘m setting my reading goal for 2020 at fifty books. I anticipate quite a few graphic novels in there, so I don‘t think that‘ll be all that unrealistic. I‘ve got three books I‘m in the middle of right now: Tunnel of Bones by Victoria Schwab, East of West, Vol. 4 by Jonathan Hickman, and The Lady from the Black Lagoon by Mallory O‘Meara. There‘s also a fourth I‘m beta reading for a friend. My plate is full.

I‘ve been remiss in posting about The Light at the Bottom of the World. Loved this book! London Shah has created something special with this story. The setting is great, the plot is well-constructed, and the characters are authentic. The subject matter is timely, and while Shah gets a little heavy-handed with it, I think she balances it well. There‘s also a cliffhanger at the end that feels unnecessary, but it‘s an obvious setup for the next book.

Nute I really like the title. The pull of the story starts there for me! 4w

The Order of Time | Carlo Rovelli

I found this book fascinating, but I made the mistake of breaking up my reading of it. Given the technical nature of the topic, that made the latter half of the book a lot harder for me to follow. Overall, Rovelli does a great job providing examples or analogies to make it easier to grasp the ideas he‘s working with. Definitely recommend it but with the caveat that it‘s best if you read it straight through without taking breaks for other books.

Overall, I liked this book a lot. I like how Faring subverts the reader‘s expectations, but I also can see how the big twists will turn off some readers. Writers make an unspoken promise to the reader with each story, and there‘s a fine line between a great plot twist and failing to deliver on the original promise. My biggest sticking point is the POV of Angel, because I feel the emotional cues aren‘t authentic given the twist later in the book.

Loving the buildup to the race and the character of Leyla. London Shah has done an excellent job with The Light at the Bottom of the World, introducing this submerged world and all its many dangers and stakes. Just a really well done book, so far. She also scored points with me by sneaking in a reference to London by its older name of Londinium.

The fourth volume in this series doesn‘t read as strong as the previous three volumes. The story has grown so large that it‘s becoming more difficult to track all the characters and how they connect. This fourth volume comes together in the end, but I was a bit lost during the first half of it. I‘m still on board for the long haul and am eager to see how it all eventually ends. So, this is a very weird book. It‘s essentially two books in one (so far). The first storyline tracks a young woman in 1978 on the run from people who want to kill her and posing as a teacher in a remote and exclusive school in the southernmost portion of South America. The second storyline is a ghost from the present who has been sent back to 1978 to haunt that same school. I like the former storyline, not sold on the second one yet.

Holy crap. The ending to this two-book series is a jaw-dropper. My only minor gripe is that the contagion running amok isn‘t as big a focus for the majority of this book compared to the first book, but Bowman delivers a logical progression from the events of the first book. She deserves praise for avoiding a sequel that could have been a simple retread. This series has locked me in as a fan, so I‘ll be reading more of Erin Bowman‘s books.

Gideon the Ninth | Tamsyn Muir
post image
Mehso-so

The last hundred pages save this book from being a pan for me. Tamsyn Muir‘s voice is a blast, and makes following Gideon Nav‘s story more interesting than it would be otherwise. Gideon suffers from a similar problem to Harry Potter: even though she‘s present for a lot of stuff that‘s happening, she herself does next to nothing to advance the plot. That makes the first 3/4 of the book boring. -continued in the comments-

BillBlume I also don‘t think Muir‘s writing is as solid as many are praising it. She does a dreadful job in scenes with a large number of characters and there a lot of scenes with a lot of characters. Harrow seems like the most interesting character in the batch, but I couldn‘t muster any investment in the rest of the supporting cast. “Oh, that Fifth House person died? Okay. Whatever.” -con‘t- 3mo
BillBlume The worldbuilding seems like the most interesting part of the book, but Gideon is so 🙄 about everything and proud of being 🙄, that despite her interesting voice, she makes a dreadful lens for observing this universe. I feel like Tor Books saw the pitch “Lesbian necromancers in space” (which is a BRILLIANT pitch), decided that was enough to sell this book to readers, and then half-assed the editing process.
