My wife Sheri and I voted this afternoon. Hoping the results will turn out as blue as my shirt. #VirginiaElection

I was shocked to learn last night about the death of Tony Horwitz (article: https://wapo.st/2JKp4dB). I met him at the first James River Writers Conference here in Richmond in 2003. His book Blue Latitudes had a profound influence on my writing. He took what could have been a dull book on the voyages of Captain Cook and made it fun. I challenged myself to add more humor to my writing, and my Gidion Keep novels owe a small debt to him for that.

Got out and voted. I‘ve never seen my polling place as crowded as it was this year, not even for a presidential election. Really hoping that‘s a good sign, because there are two key races here. Rewarding myself for voting with a cup of coffee. #Election2018 #IVoted #HellYeah

#readJanuary- While I normally prefer cold weather, this book, my favorite travelogue, had me #DreamingOfAWarmerClimate. The author retraces Captain Cook's voyages through the Pacific.

Cook,” the historian Bernard Smith speculates, “increasingly realised that wherever he went he was spreading the curses much more liberally than the benefits of European civilization.

I remember being so absorbed into this book. It is a wonderful and detailed account about Captain James Cook and all his adventures and ultimate misadventures. It's crazy good ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m not a big non-fiction reader, but I love Tony Horwitz‘s Blue Latitudes. The book follows Tony‘s adventures as he visits places where explorer Captain Cook traveled & searches for signs of Cook‘s lasting presence. Tony‘s experiences add a lot of humor, changing Blue Latitudes into more of a chat at the bar with an old friend. This book influenced my writing a lot, making me work harder at injecting humor into my writing. #travel #travelwriting

BillBlume @LeahBergen I think my favorite part is when they accidentally steal the car on the island. Laughed myself silly when I read that. 7y

BillBlume This book influenced my writing a lot. The way Tony wove so much humor into his storytelling amazed me. 8y
Leelee08 @BillBlume That's one of my favorite things about a good non-fiction writer: the ability to blend humor and story into true events.😊 8y
