Given: Poems | Wendell Berry

For five decades Wendell Berry has been a poet of great clarity and purpose. He is an award-winning writer whose imagination is grounded by the pastures of his chosen place and the rooms and porches of his family's home. In "Given" ? his first collection of new poems in ten years now in paperback ? the work is as rich and varied as ever before. With his unmistakable voice as the constant, he dexterously maneuvers through a variety of forms and themes ? political cautions, love poems, a play in verse, and a long series of ?Sabbath PoemsOCO that resulted from Berry's recent Sunday morning walks of meditation and observation. Berry's work is one of devotion to family and community, to the earth and her creatures, to the memories of the past, and the hope of the future. His writing stands alongside the work of William Carlos Williams and Robert Frost as a rigorous American testament. "

People use drugs, legal and illegal, because their lives are intolerably painful or dull. They hate their work and find no rest in their leisure. They are estranged from their families and their neighbors. It should tell us something that in healthy societies drug use is celebrative, convivial, and occasional, whereas among us it is lonely, shameful, and addictive. We need drugs, apparently, because we have lost each other.

Bookwomble What an insightful indictment of the fragmentation of social relationships and of urban alienation 😕 3y
Ddzmini Or there‘s no way lace to get mental health where the doctor you see is actually present and interested in what is really happening to you. As a learning psychologist I have seen both side of this issue and can say it‘s sad that we know so much and still can‘t help those in need of help 😨😰 3y

Poetry has always been hard for me. I never really connected with it and felt a certain failing in that. But, in reading another book, I came across a poem by Wendell Berry. So, I went to the library & checked some of his poetry out and I can honestly say I have found my poetry soulmate. There is a simple ease to his poetry as if each line is parsed and reworked until it is fresh and pops, but in a subdued way. Anyone have other recommendations?
