RuthiellaFinally, Shirley is on the scene! I like her too.2d
eeclaytonI like Shirley, but I was surprised that Shirley was supposed to be a name for a boy. I'm a non-native speaker of English but for me it definitely feels like a girl's name.2d
willaful@BarkingMadRead lol, of course! I'm not used to her older version. My husband met her once, when he was a little boy.2d
Clare-DragonflyShirley! I like her but now that I know she‘s the one who owns the land… I fear Robert will marry her and Caroline will be even more heartbroken. Since it seems to have been firmly a man‘s name at the time of this writing, I wonder if this book is why it‘s now more commonly a woman‘s name?2d
willaful@eeclayton In the U.S. it's definitely a girl's name now, but that's a fairly common progression -- once a name starts being used for women, no one names their boys that anymore. 🙄 I was very surprised by Leslie Howard, because I only knew it as a girl's name.2d
Bklover@Clare-Dragonfly I was googling about this and I read it was a combination of this book and Shirley Temple. However this was who-knows-where on Google!2d
Austen_meets_Annie178 pages out of 587 and FINALLY Charlotte Bronte introduces the title character. To say the pace is slow is an understatement. Only 26 more Chapters to go. 😆
