Romeo & Juliet | William Shakespeare
post image

https://youtu.be/beV56hp4T3w

Dear Purists: Please be kind.

I really liked this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set in the suburb of Verona Beach. I love the dissonance between the modern characters, props, and setting and the Shakespearean English dialogue of the original play. It made for a surreal and beautiful experience that played well to my literary and artistic senses.

Pogue This was one of my favorite adaptations. It shows how the story is essentially about gangs and their fights, not about Romance. 10mo
Cinfhen And the soundtrack was fantastic 🤟🏼 10mo
Brooke_H And Harold Parrineau is so good as Mercurio! 10mo

KathyWheeler I loved this version. 10mo
madamereadsalot1 I adore this version! 10mo
Clare-Dragonfly As a snobby teenager, I hated this version. But I‘ve seen it many times since and love it now. My teacher friend says that it‘s the most faithful adaptation, line for line, of the play. 10mo
BookishTrish I lived this movie. Have you heard Claire Danes read The Handmaid‘s Tale? 10mo
Soubhiville I love this movie too! I can‘t say how many times I‘ve watched it. 💔❤️ 10mo
PaperbackPirate Another fan of the movie & soundtrack! I don‘t think you need to apologize. 10mo
TheKidUpstairs I LOVE this movie. And as @PaperbackPirate said, it's got a great soundtrack! 10mo
TheKidUpstairs @Pogue yes! I hate when people hold this up as the ultimate love story/romance. It's a bloody tragedy!!! 10mo
TheKidUpstairs @Brooke_H he was perfection in that role. 10mo
ravenlee I was ambivalent about this movie when it came out but I wore out the soundtrack (on cassette!). 10mo
Centique I loved this movie too! Baz Luhrmann has a unique touch. Have you seen Strictly Ballroom? It‘s over the top but also sweet and fabulous. 😍 10mo
LiterRohde @Centique I have not. 10mo
LiterRohde @PaperbackPirate Thank you for the support! I didn‘t expect too much pushback from Littens, so the comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but some people are so adamant about not messing with the “original”. 10mo
LiterRohde @BookishTrish I have not. But I can see how she would be a good choice as narrator. 10mo
PaperbackPirate @LiterRohde I think it shows the quality of the story if it‘s still relevant today, so if there is a grump tell them to take it as a compliment! 😁 10mo

Pickpick

Anastasia is appalled to learn her family is moving to #thesuburbs. So embarrassing and unoriginal! 😂 I love her. #timbittunes

Bookwormjillk I used to love her! The memories! 10mo
ApplesandSpindles Lol! I don't usually associate Lois Lowry with plucky heroines with adorable plots! 10mo
TheKidUpstairs Oh my gosh, I'd forgotten about her! 10mo
Centique Excellent choice! 10mo

A few selections from Read It Forward's "21 Novels about Being Trapped in Suburbia."
There's lots of books about sad white people in #thesuburbs. ? Not a genre I like, although I've read some of these including the tagged book which was awful.

WhatWouldJaneDo I read Tampa a few months ago. I liked it but man was it messed up. Kind of impressed by how far the author was willing to go. 10mo
Mrsann2000 I agree with “awful”! I read a couple of these and that description fits. 10mo
CarolynM I liked Belong To Me a lot 10mo

irre I really liked Belong to Me too @CarolynM 10mo
CarolynM @irre I've enjoyed all Marissa de los Santos's books 10mo
merelybookish @WhatWouldJaneDo I have heard Tampa is an interesting read! 10mo
merelybookish @Mrsann2000 It's mostly that these books tend to be people by awful characters. Revolutionary Road is a well-written but so miserable to read. 10mo
merelybookish @CarolynM @irre The description sounds interesting! Better than The Corrections, that's for sure! 🙂 10mo
irre Me too @CarolynM She‘s an auto-buy for me. 10mo
CarolynM I bailed on The Corrections at the 100 page Mark - I just didn't care. Marissa de los Santos's characters are much more engaging. Belong To Me is the sequel to 10mo
Cinfhen @WhatWouldJaneDo I totally agree!!! Tampa made my favorite reads of 2018 😜 10mo
Reggie Oh, I loved the tagged book. I agree, everyone in there was unlikable but I couldn‘t look away. 10mo
merelybookish @Reggie It was a #tob pick which is why I read it. It made me realize I needed a break from reading about rich white people. 10mo
TheKidUpstairs "Sad white people in the suburbs" is definitely an overdone genre. But every once in a while there's a gem. 10mo

I loved all the Frank Bascombe books about his life in #thesuburbs between NYC and Philadelphia. #timbittunes

CarolynM This is one I've had on my shelf for ages but never got around to. You've encouraged me to give it a try soon🙂 10mo
Cinfhen Ooohhh, you had me suburban Philadelphia....my stomping grounds #stacked 10mo

Blaire @TheKidUpstairs I‘ve read Canada, and have it 4 stars on goodreads but I only vaguely remember it. 😔 I really do have a terrible habit of not remembering the books I‘ve read. In general I really like his writing. 10mo
Blaire @CarolynM I hope you like it. I know I liked it enough to also pick up Independence Day and the lay of the land. 10mo
TheKidUpstairs @Blaire I do the same thing. I read very quickly but often forget details quickly too! 10mo

1692, in what is could kind of be considered #TheSuburbs of modern day Boston, a group of young girls started accusing townspeople of Salem of witchcraft. What transpired from that led to hundreds of accusations in the Boston area. #TimbitTunes

Cinfhen I‘m so curious about this piece of history. Although I‘ve seen mixed reviews on this particular book. 10mo
Librarybelle @Cinfhen I‘ve read parts of this particular book and had to put it down to read other books for various reasons. It‘s not narrative nonfiction. It‘s definitely a drier narrative. 10mo
TheKidUpstairs I've got this one on my TBR. I've heard that it's a dry read, as you said, rather than narrative, so I need to be in the right mood to read it! 10mo
Lauram I made it through this one a few years ago and find that I appreciate it more now that a few years have passed. @Cinfhen @Librarybelle @TheKidUpstairs (edited) 10mo
