His Right Hand | Mette Ivie Harrison

Craziness, as in people out of control. A Mormon elder is murdered at his church and all his secrets come out. Linda, the Bishop‘s wife and Curt, the Bishop, find his body. In the process of the duties to the church they become involved in finding the murderer. Lots of action and creepiness, but also a few moments of humor.

Some of the writing fell a *smidge* flat, for me. But, I stayed engaged enough that I wanted to finish. The narrative is split between a present-day FLDS plural wife who is charged with her husband‘s murder & her estranged son who tries to solve who-really-done-it & the story of Ann Eliza Young. Both women are the 19th wives. Ann Eliza to Brigham Young himself, & she documented their very public divorce. #ReadingAmerica Utah; February #BookSpin

I have learned more history in my recreational reading, through fiction and non-fiction, than I ever learned as it was force fed me all my years of public school. History books condense tid bits over and over again until you quit seeking more information and just absorb what is spoon fed through text books. Reading historical fiction, based on true events, is way more enjoyable in my opinion. I gain histories I didn't know I was...

MaggieCarr ... missing, even when the events are unfathomable in grief and hardship. True Sisters is such a history- sharing more about the journey of Mormons from across the ocean and headed West to Iowa. I knew very little of the religion and wasn't lost, as much context was shared and included within the story. 2mo

Thoughtful look at ski towns, how they‘ve evolved, become unaffordable for those who maintain and keep them running, and the growing barriers around who gets to enjoy snow sports and the mountains.

Good account of the Mormon Trail from out of Nauvoo in 1846 through the Handcart painfulness of 1857 and almost to the Railroad era. He does use some questionable sources but mostly it is well written and tries to be somewhat unbiased.

Bookwomble "Tries to be unbiased" seems a dubious accolade ? 6mo

Borrowed this from Mom-historical fiction about the Martin Handcart Company, a group of zealous European Mormon immigrants. Disastrous. Memorable.

Starting one of Stegner‘s histories I have never read. I mostly like his writing.
