“J.R.R. Tolkien did not belong to a political party, and his views do not align neatly with modern political categories. In his personal letters, he described his politics in complex and seemingly contradictory terms, calling himself both an anarchist and a monarchist. His worldview was heavily influenced by his devout Catholicism and Christian beliefs, his opposition to industrialization, and his experiences in the First World War. 👇🏼

AnnCrystal Tolkien was a traditionalist who revered history and heritage. However, his conservatism was not aligned with the politics of his day; he had a deep disdain for fascism and opposed imperialism, which was a mainstream conservative position during his life.“ - From Web Article. 1mo
AmyG I share his deep distain for fascism. 1mo

AnnCrystal @TieDyeDude we are indeed... whenever I'm reading about J.R.R. Tolkien, I usually have to reread, and cross reference his notes 😂🤗, he was such a complex character ✊🏼🦅✊🏼💫💫💫. 1mo
Bookwomble In 1938, Tolkien was asked by a prospective German publisher to prove he was "of Aryan descent". His reply included, "if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people." He effectively told them to get lost, and a German translation didn't appear until the '50s. 3w
Bookwomble In a letter to his son, Michael, Tolkien wrote, “I have in this war a burning private grudge against that ruddy little ignoramus Adolf Hitler. Ruining, perverting, misapplying, and making for ever accursed, that noble northern spirit, a supreme contribution to Europe, which I have ever loved, and tried to present in its true light.” https://lithub.com/on-the-time-j-r-r-tolkien-refused-to-work-with-nazi-leaning-p... 3w
AnnCrystal 👏🏼🤩👍🏼 this is all brilliant ✊🏼 ☺️ Thank You for sharing.

I especially like the parts:

“...can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people.“

and

“I have in this war a burning private grudge against that ruddy little ignoramus Adolf Hitler.“

Tolkien had elegance ✍️😉👍🏼💫.

We are all living through dark, scary times right now, and I want to share this with anyone I can.

Not that I believe any one here needs this, but because I believe we all need this highlighted right now.

It is an important message that I hope you will read and share.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal Batman has taught me well on the necessity of empathy, and the dangers of falling into rage over injustice.

A week or two ago, I saw a very interesting episode of Professor T (Ben Miller version) where Professor Jasper Tempest gave a compelling classroom lecture about this subject (without the Batman element).

Episode: September Gardens
Second episode of season four

I couldn't source a direct transcript of this lecture, so I will summarize...👇
1mo
AnnCrystal Professor Tempest speaks about the dark side of empathy, about how Empathy is not always a purely positive emotion if combined with rage, which could cause a distorted view of justice.

Professor Tempest states that the witnessing of extreme injustice can cause the powerful, sometimes destructive, feelings of an empath to unleash. Because suppressed anger can lead to “volcanic rage“ that erupts uncontrollably.

AnnCrystal With all the hatred and injustice that we are experiencing and witnessing, we must keep ourselves from falling into the traps of rage.

We must be strong, have endurance, resist, make our voices heard, etc. Yet, we must continue this work to defend and protect Democracy with peace as the foundation or we'll lose the game being played.

They want us to fail, to give up, to fall into their traps.

REPHRASED: Rage can be a trap if not filtered.

ImperfectCJ "Rage is a trap." I have been pondering the power and limitations of rage a lot lately. Outrage is tempting and addictive, especially as it allows us to ignore more challenging emotions. It also makes it pretty much impossible to think rationally. 1mo
TheBookHippie I think people mix up literal rage and figurative rage .. you can rage against injustice without it being evil. Rage can also keep you safe. To take away rage especially from women is a disservice. I understand your point. I agree don‘t give into hatred. Keep peace inside yourself. But one can have peace within and rage at injustice at the same time. It‘s a nuance people do not get. 1mo

Chrissyreadit These are challenging times. Rage is supposed to occur in extreme situations to give us the adrenaline and cortisol we need to survive. I think one of the struggles is that what causes us to feel rage is not in front of us- and so rage doesn‘t serve the same purpose but boy do i feel it. 1mo

AnnCrystal To pull my Batman obsession back into this conversation 🦇👀🦇, I feel that he makes a good model on how we should channel our rage...not literally 🤔😂, but allow rage to fuel us instead of destroy us ✊🏼😎✌🏼. (edited) 1mo
Bookwomble As John Lydon sang, "Anger is an energy." Anger is a valid emotion in the face of injustice, it's what we do with our anger that matters. 1mo
AnnCrystal @Bookwomble that's the concerning part, especially with our young. Regardless of politics, or culture, or whatever sperates us, humans...how do we teach to filter anger? Perhaps there should be classes in schools that focus on the importance of Empathy, anger management, and creative channeling of emotions 😎✌🏼. 1mo
