The Noh Mask Murder | Akimitsu Takagi
post image
Pickpick

An old seaside mansion. Dark gothic atmosphere. An exotic setting. Sinister locked-room mystery. Depraved and broken characters. A public prosecutor in search of the truth. Unreliable narrators.
Japan, unsettled nation during the aftermath of WWII. Multiple elaborate murders. Elegant, refined prose. An outstanding translation.
...

Yuki_Onna Continued:
Eerieness creeps through the pages like the seaside mist underlying the story.
Historical murder mystery, social commentary, character study, domestic thriller, gothic literature.
Maybe the perfect book for the perfect time exists. The Noh Mask Murder has it all.
5/5⭐

Hello Littens! I‘ve been writing a blog about books for 23 years, first at Blogspot and at Wordpress since 2005. I have recently spent some time revamping the site and adding new content. Take a look at http://itsallaboutthebook.org. In addition to reviews, I have 2 features on the site - Reader Profiles and Author Spotlights- and I am look for some new entries for both. If you‘re interested, let me know.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd | Agatha Christie

Pickpick

There is so much to enjoy in this book. Quick pacing and short chapters allow the narrative to flow and the read is relatively short. One might think of this as a downside, but Christie does a marvelous job at doling out information, keeping the reader totally engaged. The dialogue is an intelligent mix of serious conversation with witty banter. And the ending, while no longer a surprise, is amazing! #AgathaChristie #PushkinPress #NetGalley

Beatlefan129 I read this one recently and felt the same, it was a really fun read! 2y

Late Fame | Arthur Schnitzler
post image
Pickpick

4⭐️ The reason I chose this book is because Schnitzler was a good friend of my fav author Stefan Zweig. Vienna in the 19th century was the heaven for artists. They gathered in Cafe Griensteidl to discuss and formulate their thoughts. Late Fame is a story about an old man longing to find late fame when all has been forgotten, only to realize that it‘s just a lost hope 😥

BarbaraBB I didn‘t know about their friendship. I love Zweig too. 2y

I really enjoyed this middle grade book that hit on themes of family relationships, friendship, and loss/grief through the eyes of a child. The story was quick, enjoyable, and heartwarming and had a fun little plot twist that was unexpected!

Thank you to #NetGalley and #PushkinPress for the ARC to review!

This 1929 novel is the first to appear in English. Liza (14) and her brother Nikolai (16) and their mother Natasha are Russian exiles in France. They seem hedonistic (a la Bonjour Tristesse), but really they are lonely, a burden to their mother who abandons them in Paris. Liza desperately wants and needs her mother‘s love. Kolya and Andrei make desperate plans. #intranslation #WIT #russianlit
