The Great Believers | Rebecca Makkai

Pickpick

While I wish Makkai had just focused on the chapters set in the 1980s and 90s, I was so engaged by her writing that I felt bad everytime I had to put the book down. I knew very little about the AIDS crisis in America, but Makkai‘s book made it seem real and alive to me. I lost friends, I felt scared, and I hurt along with Yale and Fiona.

I just realised, that I never filled the Winter prompt for #NewToYouAuthor for #Booked2019 so this is my pick

Cathythoughts Great ... I need to get back to this one ... it in #hibernation 3w
Cinfhen It‘s on my want list !! Just waiting for the softcover version 3w
TrishB I loved this 💕 3w

BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review. It really hurt and touched my heart—one of my 2018 favorites. 3w
Lola @Cinfhen I can‘t wait to hear your thoughts on this one. For me it was 🥰 June 4th for the paperback. Almost here!
(edited) 3w
Cinfhen Thanks for update @Lola if you were all 😍🤩😍over this book, then I‘m sure I‘m gonna be too 😘😘 3w
Lola @Cinfhen 👍🏻If you come to Chicago, I‘ll take you to the some of the places mentioned in the book 😘 3w
Cinfhen Deal @Lola 👊🏽 3w
Lindy I enjoyed both the past and the present timelines. The effects of loss can continue for decades and Makkah's portrayal of that is one of this novel's strengths. 3w
ephemeralwaltz Okay I have this on my Kindle and was debating whether to start it but I think I have to now. 3w
Kalalalatja @Lindy for me, the present timeline got a bit too “we have to solve a mystery”-ish for me, but I did like how Makkai showed how loss isn‘t just something you move on from, it stays with you in ways you can imagine 2w
Kalalalatja @ephemeralwaltz it is definitely worth it! I say go for it 👍 2w

A little behind, but real life got in the way... I enjoyed this #nanreathread. A tale of mother and daughter told in separate times one during WWI and the other during WWII. I enjoyed Anna‘s story more than Kitty‘s, but both were told well.

Thanks for hosting @Librarybelle and @CouronneDhiver

Also fits #newtoyouauthor for #booked2019

CouronneDhiver 🙌🏽🙌🏽 thanks for joining in 1mo

Both entertaining and fact-filled, this tells the story of two scientists - chief medical examiner Charles Norris & toxicologist Alexander Gettler - in the early 20th century New York, who laid the groundwork for forensic medicine which was pivotal for both forensic science & future generations.

Rating: 5🌟

Not a good week for great books. This just was bleh. Too many back and forths in places and time, from a reader who likes that style. #maymadness #Newtoyouauthor #3

TheReadingMermaid That sucks girl. But hey whenever you pick up a book it's always a 50/50 chance right? 1mo
Clwojick 😌Can‘t win em all! Maybe try a book from a favourite author next, just so you don‘t get in a reading slump. 😅 1mo
Samplergal @TheReadingMermaid I‘m usually better at picking books , but this story line was interesting to me as I had read a non fiction book on her affair with Hitch. This was weak. 1mo

When it takes me well over a week to finish a novel of moderate length, it gets no more than three stars. I didn‘t hate it. Just didn‘t love it. Kate Morton can write.

This book was “It‘s a Wonderful Life” rebooted as a sci-fi thriller. It was a love story. It was a quantum physics story. It was a murder, mayhem, and mystery story. It was all of this and so much more. It addresses the ramifications of the choices we make, questions the idea and nature of good and evil, flips the idea of the self on its head, and generally just screws with your sense of reality.

Kimberlone I‘m currently halfway through this and can‘t believe how surprised I keep finding myself. Every chapter has had a twist or turn I didn‘t expect! I‘m sure as I finish up my expectations will continue to be subverted! 1mo
rwmg Great review. I may have to move this further up the virtual TBR list 1mo
