The True History of the Elephant Man | Peter Ford, Michael Howell
post image

#nofemmeber #freakyfreaks

Playing catch up! This book is sitting on my unread shelf and I promise I‘m going to get to you next year! I watched David Lynch‘s movie The Elephant Man as a child and was so moved by Joseph‘s plight. For most of history society has been afraid of and ridiculed and isolated deformity (as well as other health issues that have been treated as “horrific”). Health is another source of diversity we need to understand 💕

Billypar Loved the Lynch film, and it would be interesting to hear more about the real story, sad as it must be. 14mo
Cathythoughts I loved this movie too ... I can still remember it years later 👍🏻♥️ 14mo

DAY 24: Cooger & Dark‘s Pandemonium Shadow Show = #freakyfreaks

#nofemmeber

Billypar I never actually knew what this was about, only the title. Sounds intriguing from the description! 14mo
britt_brooke @Billypar I didn‘t care for it myself, but I know a lot of folks who loved it. 14mo
Cinfhen This actually sounds good. What genre would you put it under??? 14mo
Cinfhen I‘m loving the image you used as well...what‘s it from???? 14mo
britt_brooke @Cinfhen It‘s considered dark fantasy and/or horror, but I found it cheesy rather than scary. I forgot to credit the photo, but it‘s a scene from the 1983 film (which looks better than the book, IMO). 🙈 (edited) 14mo

#FreakyFreaks There's a lot going on in this coming of age tale of two friends in '70s Brooklyn. Both face different realities due to racial factors of the time (one is black, the other white), but a magic ring gives them superpowers and also the chance to transcend some of those realities (with varying degrees of success). As a newer female rapper in a male-dominated arena, Kamaiyah faces similar challenges, but hopefully she can rise above them!

Mel Barry, ex-military cop, was the daughter of a Fat Lady in a carnival freakshow. When her estranged adopted father calls on her for help, she returns home.

🎉I actually own a book with a #femaledetective for #booked2019 (seriously- Just the one!) This was pub'd by Fahrenheit Press - sweary fun to follow on Twitter, but I haven't always loved their books so 🤞.Kriel (author) grew up in the circus as a clown & acrobat.

#NoFemmeBer #Freakyfreaks there are a lot of #freakyfreaks in this book , but I have to say I love Eileen..... with Eileen you walk on a tightrope- that borderline edge of comedy & poignancy & brilliant truth.
It‘s safe to say I‘m loving this book ... not over yet though ...

TrishB I can tell you‘re loving it 💕 14mo
