The True History of the Elephant Man
The True History of the Elephant Man | Peter Ford, Michael Howell
5 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Joseph Carey Merrick, born in Leicester on 5th August 1852, is better known as the Elephant Man. Through horrible physical deformities which were almost impossible to describe, he spent much of his life exhibited as a fairground freak until even nineteenth-century sensibilities could take no more. Hounded, persecuted and starving, he ended up one day at Liverpool Street Station where he was rescued, housed and fed by the distinguished surgeon Frederick Treves. To Treves' surprise, he discovered during the course of their friendship that lurking beneath the mass of Merrick's corrupting flesh lived a spirit that was as courageous as it had been tortured, and a nature as gentle and dignified as it had been deprived and tormented. The subject of several books, a Broadway hit, and a film, Joseph Merrick has become a part of popular mythology. Here, in this fully revised edition containing much fresh information, are the true and unromanticised facts of his life. An extraordinary and moving story, set amongst the brutal realities of the Victorian world, telling of a tragic individual and his survival against overwhelming odds.

A week of bails from His Elderliness. The Nation‘s Hangar - bailed “it looked good but it‘s too big for me” (larger books can be hard for him to read because of arthritis in his shoulders affecting his arm movements) An Anthropologist on Mars - “I bailed. It‘s way over my head this one”. The True History of the Elephant Man - “I finished that one. It was good, but a weird story.”
And one wild rabbit visitor...

TrishB Not a good week for him then! 4y
LeahBergen It‘s good that he bails and moves on to things he‘ll like! 👍🏻 4y
Reggie I‘m glad he doesn‘t settle. Good for him!! The bunny!!! 4y

Centique @TrishB I know! He was very excited about the Charles Manson book I turned up with though, so hopefully this week is better 🤞 4y
Centique @LeahBergen When I started going to the library for him I said I‘ll just get lots of books and then you can pick and choose what interests you. He usually tries them all now. He‘s surprised himself with how often he doesn‘t like the look of a book but it wins him over. 4y
Centique @Reggie the bunny! Taken from a distance. Thank god for zoom 🐰 4y

AlaMich Re: the book that was too big...does His Elderliness need a Kindle for the chunksters? 😉 4y
Centique @AlaMich I tried him on e-books but he got tetchy about where to press to go backwards and forwards and threw in the towel on them unfortunately. It‘s a shame because that would make those books more accessible. 4y
AlaMich It makes all the difference! 4y
Cinfhen I LOVE that your dad has embraced the BAIL!!! Good for him!!!! 4y

I am loathe to call any human being a “freak”, but that was how Joseph (“John”) Merrick was “marketed” for Victorian audiences. As well as this book, his story was told in a sympathetic portrayal by the excellent actor John Hurt.

KarenUK Such a good movie..... 💔 5y
tournevis Good movie indeed. He was also played quite well, very differently, on stage by David Bowie. 5y
Andrew65 @KarenUK John Hurt was so brilliant in this! @tournevis @TheEllieMo (edited) 5y

Playing catch up! This book is sitting on my unread shelf and I promise I‘m going to get to you next year! I watched David Lynch‘s movie The Elephant Man as a child and was so moved by Joseph‘s plight. For most of history society has been afraid of and ridiculed and isolated deformity (as well as other health issues that have been treated as “horrific”). Health is another source of diversity we need to understand 💕

Billypar Loved the Lynch film, and it would be interesting to hear more about the real story, sad as it must be. 5y
Cathythoughts I loved this movie too ... I can still remember it years later 👍🏻♥️ 5y

Great sale on Book Depository - I got these about two fascinating people. I don't think any film has made me cry as hard as The Elephant Man.
Plus some random shots for interest (my screen shots aren't that pretty) - these are from my favourite second hand furniture shop (again! I'm just using them for photo props for Litsy these days!) I love the way they set up mini room settings with old furniture - I'm keeping an eye out for a reading chair.

Man, there's a lot of great ebook deals today (via Book Bub and Early Bird Books). No, I don't work for them or anything, lol. I just get excited by great deals for books.
