This is a mixed bag for me. I really loved so much of this—the characters were vivid and the 90s Florida setting was palpable. I was right there in CC‘s shoes as she navigated growing up in a tumultuous household. #dysfunctionalfamily lovers take notice! However! Parts of this fell apart and there was little to no ending. I even reread sections to make sure I wasn‘t missing anything. Nope, just several threads never mentioned again 🤷‍♀️

Genuinely curious as to why there is no reviews for this book yet. Was a pretty quick read, not a very satisfying ending but I think it‘s supposed to be that way. 3.5/5 stars. I still think you should read it though 😊

Thank you @Eggs for the #WondrousWednesday tag! 🤗

1️⃣ I can‘t pick just one! Elf, The Holiday, Love Actually, The Family Stone & A Christmas Story are probably my top 5.🎄

2️⃣ … a hippopotamus 🦛 followed by …to be on a hit list! Hmm…🤔😆

3️⃣ I have a very old red book from childhood that has the tagged story in it. The Peterkins are “quirky” & their “problem-solving” makes me laugh so I reread it & some of the other stories most years. 📕⬇️

DebinHawaii …Play along if you haven‘t yet! ❤️🤗💚 4mo

George was a McDreamy, and Lizzie was something shy of a nightmare. I should have been done with her since George deserved better. But something about Lizzie intrigued me, and I wanted her to understand the love in her life. The audio was available so I experienced both audio and print. It gave me Ann Patchett vibes, and I‘m not sure if it was the writing or the author‘s own narration of the story.

This is the sound of you breathing. This is the sound of the engine.
Inside this small space, the air recirculates. It always feels cold. Outside You are rushing through the air so fast. There is always this rushing.
Stay here. Stay calm. Stay still.
Open your eyes.
Do you see me?
You won't want to see me, but you will.

I haven‘t read any short stories by Oates and only one novel by her. She‘s quite prolific and is one of the most well known authors in the country. The stories here are unusual, I might even say creepy, but very good. I suppose they might fit into that genre of psychological horror, and many of her other collections land there too, if the titles are anything to go by. Highly recommend, five stars.

Utilizing the past catastrophes of Chicago to tell a modern day ghost story, genius. Well-developed characters and just the right amount of spookiness makes this a great October read.

This was a light read that serenaded me through all my driving, chores, and activities today. Photojournalist Madison has 3 grown children, no current spouse/lover, so at a critical juncture of late middle age, she takes an extended trip to visit family and friends…
