Pickpick

A favorite from my childhood which I've revisited fairly often! I don't recall it being so repetitive but I feel that's a frequent issue with me these days. What a fun experience actually hearing some broad Yorkshire, since I've never really known how to put a spin on it and you can only imagine what it sounds like in NewYorkese! 🤣

I am so happy this book lived up to my memories! A #childhoodfavorite that I really adored reading again.

It is not the scary story that some expect from the title. It is a reflection on what it is like to be an outsider in a new land, and standing up for others. Plus, the Puritan part of American history has always fascinated me. And Kit...I love Kit, she is such a free spirit.

Read for #Booked2018, #MountTBR and #pop18 #childhoodclassic

SomedayAlmost This is an oft-assigned book in Massachusetts public schools and I remember really liking it! 6y
Johanna414 I read this over and over again when I was a pret-teen 6y
alisiakae @SomedayAlmost I‘m pretty sure I first read it as a school assignment. ☺️ @Johanna414 Same!! 6y

Mehso-so

This started out giving me Pride and Prejudice vibes, and it definitely had its wonderful moments. Buuuuuut... it didn‘t really make me feel anything. I didn‘t root for any or the characters, but I didn‘t hate any of the characters, either. It was just a bit meh... and I know this is very well loved, but just not for me.

First book finished for the #readathon

#Booked2018 #childhoodclassic

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m always sad when a book isn‘t what I hope for. At least it checked off a prompt. 👏🏻👏🏻 6y
Cinfhen Yay on book one for readathon and another prompt for #booked2018❤️ 6y
Zelma I always feel kind of bad when I don‘t love a beloved favorite, yet I shouldn‘t be surprised. I often don‘t go with the flow on what‘s hyped up. 6y

AlaMich Same here. I don‘t think I even finished it. I wanted soooo badly to love this book because it was soooo up my alley, but I just didn‘t. 6y
Skyrimir These were my exact thoughts when I read it too! I read it when I was much younger. I‘ve been thinking about trying it again to see if I feel differently. 6y
Meglet I just finished this earlier this week...and your words echo my feelings. 6y
Blaire So glad I found your review! I felt the same way and was feeling alone with all the raves. ☺️ 5y
Kalalalatja @Blaire it is a quite popular book, it just didn‘t do it for me 🤷‍♀️ 5y
Blaire @Kalalalatja yep. I wanted to love it but just didn‘t. 5y

A Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle

Panpan

I never liked it as a child, and I definitely don‘t like it as an adult. In fact, looking back, I think this is what turned me off of sci-fi until my early 20s.

*runs and hides under cover*

Oh, you‘re still reading? You don‘t hate me? 🍅 😂

The above quote is one example of the rather ridiculous writing, even for a kids book. I accept what it was for its time. But, L‘Engle explains nothing. It‘s pulpish. Characters are flat. It‘s a mess.

alisiakae I read this for #childhoodclassic #Booked2018 and #differentplanet for #pop18. So at least it counts for something. (edited) 6y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen can you clarify if the April - June prompt is Childhood classic or childhood favorite? I have it written down both ways! You would think I would know the prompts in my own challenge. 😂😂😂 (edited) 6y
ReadingSusan I feel the exact same way. My little sister loved these books and pushed them on me for years. I finally read it and really disliked it. I thought maybe because I was an adult. 6y

thebookmagpie I wasn't keen on this either! I only read it for the first time as an adult though. I was so surprised by how well-beloved it is! 6y
alisiakae @ReadingSusan My 10 year old didn‘t like it either, and I first read it around the same age. She didn‘t get past the first 100 pages. @thebookmagpie I‘m glad I‘m not the only one! (edited) 6y
Balibee146 Don't really fancy it or the movie tbh....well apart from Mr Pine and his glorious beard 😁 6y
Suelizbeth A Wrinkle In Time is my blanket book, but Litsy has taught me that we don‘t all love the same books and that‘s OK. I am always interested in hearing other readers‘ opinions about books I take for granted as being universally beloved. Littens rule! 6y
queerbookreader @Balibee146 god I love his beard 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 6y
alisiakae @Suelizbeth Aww...I love how you describe it. If I had a childhood blanket book, it would probably be The Secret Garden. 6y
Suelizbeth @4thhouseontheleft Oh, that‘s a great book, too. 6y
alisiakae @Balibee146 @queerbookreader agree! ❣️❣️❣️ 6y
Smangela That‘s a good point! I rarely dislike a book (I think I‘m secretly afraid I‘m going to hurt the book‘s feelings) BUT it could certainly be more meaty (that‘s not the best word here but... it‘s all I can think of hahaha) 6y
LiteraryinLawrence I agree! It‘s not one that I enjoy. 6y
Kamisha I definitely get what you‘re saying! I liked the first book okay as a kid. It certainly wasn‘t my favorite, but I never read the rest of the series so I‘m currently trying to do that...and it is hard going. Ridiculous is a good way to describe the writing. I keep trying to like it, but I just don‘t! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @Suelizbeth I like how you describe it too 😊 6y
GarthRanzz No hate here! I didn‘t care for it either. Like others I just thought it was because I was too old when I first read it. 6y
Bklover I bailed on it as a kid and don‘t have any desire to pick it up again! 6y
theresidentromantic Lol I think I'm totally biased because there's such a lack of main characters named Meg, I'll probably die on the hill of A Wrinkle in Time is wonderful and made of romance and magic. But, tbh, that little kid is creepy and the other four books in the series are basically unreadable ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 6y
Rachbb3 I agree, I've never liked this book either. I'll go a bit further and say I have no interest in seeing the movie. 🤤😒 6y
Balibee146 @Suelizbeth great description.... My blanket book is still The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (even if I do take issue with the treatment of female sexuality the Narnia series as an adult) it just makes me feel like a happy kid again 😁 6y
Cinfhen You are one BRAVE girl voicing an unpopular opinion 🙌🏻which I AGREE with 💯‼️‼️ 6y
BennettBookworm Yeah I have lots to say about this book and none of it's good haha 6y
Suelizbeth @Balibee146 Another good one. 6y
Suet624 I agree with @Cinfhen. Very brave. I‘m proud of you. ❤️ 6y
