Prompt: MOONLIGHT

Welcome to the 50's.....Grandma and Grandpa taking care of children, Mom gone, only Dad.  Doesn't sound like the 50's to me....sounds more like the way families are today.

A nostalgic trip back to a life that should have been filled with stable families, but…

I‘m a little late with this, but last week I received #athingaday from @DinoMom and it made my day! I put the coffee pins up at my cubicle in my grad office 😊🍂☕️💛

My almost-teen has very specific but eclectic interests. 😂 These are his recent purchases. On the one hand he still loves Captain Underpants and Dog Man, and has read all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books multiple times. On the other his bedtime reading lately has been geopolitical non-fiction. He's finished Prisoners of Geography, and is ready to move on to The Power of Geography.

Your Voice in My Head | Emma Forrest
Mehso-so

moments of wit and even lyricism, and the opening is charming, but it descends into relentlessly charmless narcissism. The superficial manic pixie dream girl surface glitter may seem fun, but a warning: it may be triggering as it deals with cutting, rape, suicide, & eating disorders in a glib tone. Uneven & I ended up wishing the writer's parents had written their memoirs as they came across as fun, well-rounded and empathetic. The writer did not

Real Estate | Deborah Levy

Pickpick

NOT what I was expecting. And all the better for it.

The author is 59. Her youngest daughter is leaving home, her banana tree is part of the family, & the chances of her acquiring the grand house she‘s always planned are receding. So what Real Estate does she have? Or Un-Real Estate, come to that?

A surprisingly funny, wise, relatable, comfort-ready memoir-of-a-year in-essays type-thing. I will read her novels.

Audio read by Julia Stevenson👍

Centique I love Julia Stevenson and want to get to this, so that‘s good to know! 1y
rockpools @Centique It was a really good fit. Have you read others by Deborah Levy, Paula? 1y
Centique @rockpools no I haven‘t, but I have Swimming Home sitting on my shelf and looking at me! Do you have a recc for where to start with Levy? 1y

rockpools @Centique Not a clue! I have to admit I‘d never been that enthusiastic- this was a completely random Libby find, while I was waiting for my next Robin Hobb to come in! And it‘s the final part of her memoir-of-sorts, so a wildly logical place to start 😜 But @batsy @Graywacke and @squirrelbrain have all recommended Hot Milk, so that‘ll probably be what I try next 1y
squirrelbrain I really need to try these autobiographical ones, although I might start with the first one…! (Sensible, but boring, that‘s me! 🤣) 1y
rockpools @squirrelbrain Nah, just less scatterbrained than some of us 🫣 - if I waited to read things in order, I‘d get through even less than I do now! I want to go back to the start now I know I enjoy her writing. 1y
Graywacke I'm glad you enjoyed this. 1y

Gender Failure | Rae Spoon, Ivan E. Coyote

Pickpick

So so much to partially identify with - just more proof that everyone's experience of failing gender is different.
I think Rae's journey resonates more with me personally, especially the retiring from gender and gender as narrative portions.
Ivan's journey to get and recover from top surgery told throughout is beautiful and emotional and funny, it feels like the backbone of the book. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality But if medical discussion of surgery/description of surgery recovery makes you queasy like yours truly, be aware it's included.

Also warning for eating disorder/disordered eating.

Ivan's Facilites and Danger chapters are particularly impactful, as much for the writing as the subject matter. I feel like highlighting every page.I am so grateful for how vulnerable these two NB people chose to be in sharing their experiences.

The whimsy! It's the moose (more Canadian than cows, I suppose) being beamed up that got me.
