I raced through this one from the #WomensPrizeLonglist23 in two days. I loved the blend of humour and deep subject matter, as Shroff confronted gender issues, caste discrimination, domestic violence, and women's agency in a patriarchal society.

Cinfhen I think it‘s my top contender from the longlist 🙌🏻 12mo
TheKidUpstairs @Cinfhen I've been so impressed with the list this year (at least with what I've been able to get my hands on so far). Very eagerly anticipating tomorrow's shortlist announcement. I think my favourite so far is Trespasses, but if you ask me in an hour I'd probably have a different answer because there have been some great reads! 12mo
Cinfhen It‘s so true 😊I‘ve enjoyed every book I read except I haven‘t tried Glory again, I had bailed earlier in the year and I bailed on Tresspasses on audio but will 💯 try again in print 💖 I haven‘t read 4: Pod, Bread, Fan & Butterflies- which I still want to read and Fan too! 12mo

And one more from the #WomensPrizeLongList23 before shortlist is announced

DGRachel Ooh, I really want to read Clytemnestra. I can‘t wait to hear what you think of it! 12mo
Cinfhen I started Clytemnestra a few weeks ago, it was good but not great @DGRachel I need to get back to it. I think it publishes this tue or maybe it did last week…I‘m scared to see what my #NetGalley requests look like 🤪 12mo
Cathythoughts I enjoyed Sorry You Feel That Way. I must look into some of these 👍🏻😁 12mo

DGRachel @Cinfhen Sorry it wasn‘t great. I won‘t run out to buy it right away, then. Maybe I‘ll put in a request with my library. 12mo
TheKidUpstairs I just started Fire Rush! Trying to get in what I can before Wednesday! 12mo
Cinfhen Exactly @TheKidUpstairs - it‘s getting a bit darker than I expected but I‘m really enjoying the narration 12mo

LOVED this audiobook!! A cross between My Sister the Serial Killer and The Change. What‘s a girl to do when the entire village thinks you‘re a witch with powers??? EMBRACE it!!! Dark humor aplenty but touches upon a host of serious issues. #WomensPrizelonglist23 My top contender for the shortlist 😁

IndoorDame Stunning view! 13mo
Cinfhen Our Airbnb is directly across the street from the beach @IndoorDame 🤩 13mo
jlhammar Gorgeous pic! I think this might need to be my next #WomensPrize read. 13mo

Stone Blind: A Novel | Natalie Haynes

I love Haynes' takes on the old myths. Heroes are exposed, gods are delightfully petty, and women's stories take centre stage.

While I'm not sure it was Prize-worthy, it was surely an enjoyable read!

Memphis | Tara M Stringfellow

There is some very difficult subject matter in this one (see TW below), but what carries you through is the overlying feel of hope and the strength that can be found in black families, women, and communities. Stringfellow has created a beautiful family of women, fully realized in all their strengths and vulnerabilities, love and rage, gifts, talents, and quirks.

Cont'd below...

#WomensPrize #WomensPrizeLonglist23

TheKidUpstairs The jumpy timeline and POVs won't work for everyone, but I loved it. It felt like women sitting around a family table telling their stories, one leading to another, thematically linked rather than chronological. 13mo

Fantastic. O'Farrell gives her histories such beautiful texture. You can truly feel the atmosphere she creates. Lucrezia is a fascinating, genuine, and singular character, and her story is utterly absorbing from beginning to end.

@Chelsea.Poole I can see why this was on your #AuldLangSpine list! @monalyisha

Sapphire I am listening to this on audio right now. It hasn‘t “caught” for me yet, but I can see the potential 13mo

Trespasses | Louise Kennedy
post image
Pickpick

This was so much more than I was expecting. A lot of what I had read about it focused on the affair between Cushla, a Catholic, and the married Protestant Michael, but that is only one facet of her story. I think it does the book a disservice to call it the story of an affair. It is Cushla's story, her life lived during the Troubles, attempting to navigate family, friendship, live, and community. 👇

TheKidUpstairs Trying to find freedom for herself amid her obligations to an alcoholic mother. Searching for the humanity in those around her in a town and a time fraught with political and religious violence. Kennedy handles it all with an engaging voice, a deft hand, and without romanticizing any of it (including the affair). This one will stick with me for a long time.

The Dog of the North: A Novel | Elizabeth Mckenzie

@Cinfhen described this to me perfectly, it really is "whacked in a good way." It is a chaotic ride through the messed up life of Penny Rush. She sets out for Santa Barbara, determined to clean out her hoarder grandmother's house (and confiscate her gun), but not a single moment goes as planned. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the wild, weird, and wonderful ride.

A blending of genres, mediums and languages, Jennifer Croft pens her coming of age in an auto-fiction visually styled novel. It‘s sad and unsettling but easy to appreciate and get through. Croft is an award winning translator who‘s worked with many prominent authors, this is her debut. #WomensPrizeLongList23 I was able to borrow both audio and e-book from #Hoopla

squirrelbrain You‘re whizzing through the list! 13mo
Cinfhen I know @squirrelbrain I read 4 this week, I‘ve read 2 prior to the announcement and I have 2 more on the go!!! That‘s half the longlist 🙌🏻 13mo

Cinfhen @ashw21 it‘s short but really impactful- this is a case where I‘d say print form is probably better than audio @squirrelbrain Im halfway through this one and it‘s also really good 13mo

Thanks for putting this on my #ReadersRadar @TheKidUpstairs I borrowed both the audio and e-book from #Hoopla because I realized I NEEDED to see the photos that accompany the text. A story/ memoir by Jennifer Croft who is a literary translator. Croft replays her childhood experiences growing up with a beloved younger sister who is diagnosed with a brain tumor. There‘s a sense of melancholy and urgency on every page. #WomensPrizeLongList23

TheKidUpstairs Happy to spread the word for this one! It looks like we're swapping reads - my hold for Dog of the North just came in. 13mo
Cinfhen Dog is whacked in a good way @TheKidUpstairs I think you‘ll like it 13mo

Suet624 Thanks for mentioning this was on Hoopla. Just managed to download it. 13mo
Suet624 Did you notice that the audio on Hoopla is abridged? It doesn‘t say it is but if you look at the ebook on Hoopla it‘s quite different. 13mo
Cinfhen No @Suet624 I didn‘t realize !! I did half audio / half ebook but I didn‘t notice the discrepancy 🤦🏼‍♀️ 13mo
