Perfect for fans of Hatchet and the I Survived series, this harrowing middle grade debut novel-in-verse from a Pushcart Prizenominated poet tells the story of a young girl who wakes up one day to find herself utterly alone in her small Colorado town. When twelve-year-old Maddie hatches a scheme for a secret sleepover with her two best friends, she ends up waking up to a nightmare. Shes aloneleft behind in a town that has been mysteriously evacuated and abandoned. With no one to rely on, no power, and no working phone lines or internet access, Maddie slowly learns to survive on her own. Her only companions are a Rottweiler named George and all the books she can read. After a rough start, Maddie learns to trust her own ingenuity and invents clever ways to survive in a place that has been deserted and forgotten. As months pass, she escapes natural disasters, looters, and wild animals. But Maddies most formidable enemy is the crushing loneliness she faces every day. Can Maddies stubborn will to survive carry her through the most frightening experience of her life?

Alone is an excellent middle grade novel in sparse verse about a girl who is the sole survivor following a snowpocalyse, reminiscent of Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Middle grade with Island Of The Blue Dolphins (O'Dell) & Hatchet (Paulsen) vibes. Wasn't on my radar at all until my daughter was telling me about it. Very good and written in verse.

This #tempingtitle #withoneword is a middle grade novel in verse. The protagonist is alone (very much like a modern day island of the blue dolphin) so the sparse language cleverly reflects her isolation. Very well done!

I love when I read a book and know the exact person I want to recommend it to - my friend Megan will love this. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole book but was a bit disappointed with the ending. I wanted more explanation about the events that led to her isolation, and only got a few lines. #MiddleGradeMarch @megnews @sblbooks

Daisey I really liked this one, but I agree that I was curious for a bit more explanation/resolution. (edited) 13mo

This is a different survival story than most I‘ve read. After telling both parents she‘s staying with the other and actually staying alone in an empty apartment, Maddie wakes up to find everyone in her town gone due to an emergency evacuation. After a few days, the electricity is turned off and she, with a neighbor‘s Rottweiler, learns to survive by scavenging throughout town. She uses the library for physical and mental survival strategies. ⬇️

Daisey I especially appreciated the references to Island of the Blue Dolphins & Jane Eyre. There are also references to Emily Dickinson & Mary Oliver.

I love this so much! I want to give it to my niece and save it for my daughter, plus keep it for myself. I have been sitting alone in my basement reading for hours.

Also, Jane Eyre is my favorite book, and when I see references to it in other reading, I become irrationally happy.
Thanks @Alfrazier21, this was everything I wanted it to be, and more.

Because of this book I will now forever call the library a "book church." ?

This MG book written in verse was beautifully written and I highly recommend it to readers of all ages. A young girl finds herself alone after a national security threat forces everyone into government camps. Her perseverance and resourcefulness was inspiring, but the author also explored the extreme loneliness of the situation as well.

An interesting tale of modern-day survival written in verse. Atmospheric and intense. The ending was quite abrupt as was the reason for the protagonist‘s isolation.

Twelve year old Maddie wakes up from a secret sleepover (where she ended up alone) to find that everyone is gone and she is completely alone. Except for a dog she befriends, there is nothing but endless time and loneliness…a story in verse and it is well done

A book written in verse has to be written really well and cut straight to the heart. I don‘t think the author accomplished that. The main characters isn‘t all that likable either.

A middle grade novel in verse about a young girl named Maddie who gets left behind in a mix-up, when the city she lives in is abandoned due to an imminent threat. Forced to survive on her own for years with only the neighbor's great dane, George, by her side, this is a coming of age story very different to the ones we're used to reading. Maddie begins to realize that loneliness & unfulfilled hope may be worse than the struggle to stay alive.

Riveting. Survival story and then some. Written in verse that reflects the character‘s isolation, 12 year old Maddie awakes ( from a failed sleepover) to find her entire town void of people… A mysterious evacuation. The trials and terrors that follow, along with Maddie‘s desperate thoughts and questions suck you right into her bizarre environment. How long can she survive on her own? Book 19 #MGMarch #middlegrademarch @megnews @Eggs @SaturnDoo

SarahBradley PS. I‘m not a huge dystopia fan, but this book has a sprinkling of that genre, along with some Gary Paulsen vibes, but ultimately, it‘s Maddie‘s inner dialogue and point of view that make this book a winner. (edited) 3y

An immediate evacuation occurs overnight and everyone everywhere it seems is gone. Maddie is left all alone the only companion is the neighbors dog. Her story is of survival and the will to keep on with hopes that her parents will someday come back for her.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The storyline is interesting. It got a bit suspenseful towards the end. I was on the edge of my seat.
