Jeeves and the Wedding Bells | Sebastian Faulks
post image

Read some Jeeves books, but I am by no means a buff. As far as I can tell, Faulks has done a good job of recreating the writing style, although it amused me that the great war crept in considering what he is famous for. A bit too much cricket for me, but then any cricket is too much cricket for me!

#Aprella #day8 #Homage Catching up again on this months challenge, I suck at deadlines! Ok, I think the “cozy Crime” series of today are an homage to the golden age of crime writing. Authors like Joseph Jefferson Farjeon, Dame Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L Sayers, Josephine Tey & of course, the one & only Dame Agatha Christie were inspiration to the pictured authors. I‘ve been a lifelong Dame Agatha fan & love the series above as much #christiecrimeclub

emilyhaldi I love this. I still have never read Agatha Christie but she‘s on my list! Would her books be considered "cozy mysteries"? 2y
Lizpixie @emilyhaldi she‘s part of the “Golden Age Of Crime” which shares a lot with cozy‘s, but they‘re more of a serious version, not so fluffy & humorous as most cozy‘s are. You really should read her books, they‘re fantastic! I‘d start with 2y
Cinfhen Love this collage 💕 2y

emilyhaldi Good to know! I tried Kerry Greenwood earlier this year and while the book was well-done, I decided cozy just isn‘t for me. But Christie might be more my speed! 2y
Mdargusch Christie is definitely not as fluffy as most cozy writers @emilyhaldi - you have to read at least one! (edited) 2y
kspenmoll Just finished reading a book published in 1878 that was read to Agatha Christie at Age 8 & whom she bases her habit on telling the story through dialogue on the the book/ author, Anna Katherine Green. Poirot mentions the book in The Clocks. The novel was was the assigned reading for Yale Law students. Worth a read, social & class issues in NYC at the time. 2y
kspenmoll Took information from introduction to the book by Michael Sims 2y
Reviewsbylola I enjoyed the first Phryne Fisher! A lot of the authors you listed are ones I‘ve been meaning to read. 2y

The Annotated Emma | Jane Austen, David M. Shapard
post image

#Aperella I had a busy weekend & missed 2 musical prompts so today, I'm attempting to do 3 prompts in one post.

When I hear #Supermodel I immediately think of the Jill Sobule song in Clueless rather than the SZA one. Clueless of course is an excellent #Homage to Jane Austen's Emma & although there wasn't a character based on her in Clueless, Emma's neighbor, Miss Bates, NEVER gets #TiredOfTalking.

And that is how you do it. (Cue 🎤drop...)🤣

Mdargusch Wow! Nice job!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 2y
Melissa_J Nice! 2y

Sanctuary | Robert Edric
post image

I‘m quite powerless when it comes to resisting any sort of fictional #Homage to the Brontës. ?

Sanctuary tells the (first person) story of the disgraced Branwell Brontë‘s return to Haworth and his final months with his family. I hope it‘s good! ??

emilyhaldi Oooohhhh I hope its good too!!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 2y
Reviewsbylola Omg please start a stack of all the books I‘m insisting you read right away and put this one at the top. 😂 2y

LeahBergen @Melissa_J No, but I have a hardcover of it sitting in one of my online shopping carts 😂. It‘s the British title, though 2y
LeahBergen @Melissa_J Have you read any of Jude Morgan‘s regency-era books? They‘re really good! 2y
LeahBergen @emilyhaldi I hope so! I don‘t want to disappoint @Reviewsbylola 😆 2y
Melissa_J I have not! Which are you favourites? 2y
batsy Oooh! Sounds interesting. 2y
Mdargusch This sounds great! 2y
Sophoclessweetheart I am too! I‘ve got my eye on The Glass Town Game and one Nelly Dean. Also, Jane Steele! I‘m a sucker for a retelling x 2y
LeahBergen @Melissa_J I really liked all three that I read. Try 2y
LeahBergen @batsy @Mdargusch It does, doesn‘t it?? 2y
LeahBergen @Wanderingwithwords Oh! Jane Steele is waiting on my shelf, too. 😆 2y
rubyslippersreads You are adding way too many books to my TBR list! 😄 2y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Oh, be quiet, you. I think I have 3 on order that you “made” me buy. 🤣🤣 2y

Arcadia: A novel | Iain Pears
post image

This novel feels like an #homage to Shakespeare and story telling, history and science. It is filled with literary references and a great love for stories, which makes it a perfect book for book lovers 📖

Reviewsbylola I will have to look into this one. It sounds good! 2y
emilyhaldi I've thought about buying this a couple times but the fantasy part scares me 😬 2y
Kalalalatja @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @Mdargusch the fantasy element is really quite small. There‘s some travel between worlds, and one of those worlds are dystopian, but there are no magic, dragons, or anything else high fantasy. If you could read Outlander Emily, I‘m sure you can read this 👍 2y
emilyhaldi Lol @Kalalalatja Outlander is really opening my worldview!!!! 👏🏻😆 2y

The Ballad of Black Tom | Victor LaValle

When you take a genre master's most bigoted work & put your own spin on it, making relevant social commentary in addition to telling a damn good story, *and* win the World Fantasy Award, among other accolades.

rohit-sawant @Reviewsbylola @DivaDiane @emilyhaldi @Centique @bookishbunny @PagesOfKate @GarthRanzz @Mdargusch @Well-ReadNeck Check out Lovecraft's short story "The Horror at Red Hook" before diving into this. Hope you like Ballad! Stoked that AMC is developing a series based on the book! 2y
readordierachel What a great description! This just jumped way up my tbr. And that's exciting news about the TV series! I feel like AMC produces some pretty good shows, so that bodes well :) 2y
rohit-sawant @ReadOrDieRachel Thanks, Rachel! 😃 I'm hopeful about the show as well! Especially since VL is on board as one of the executive producers. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the book! 2y

My latest read pays #homage to the wonderfully hospitable people of Gander, Newfoundland, who opened their homes and hearts to thousands of people from all over the world in the aftermath of 9/11. #Aprella

squirrelbrain Oh i‘ve got this on my TBR list. I saw ‘Come From Away‘ in NYC so really want to read this too.... 2y
emilyhaldi I didn't know about this! But sounds like a lovely story... Considering the circumstances 🙃 2y
LiteraryinLititz @squirrelbrain Me too! I saw the play last month and loved it, so I‘m curious about this book. 2y

squirrelbrain @LiteraryinLititz What did you think of the show? It‘s my favourite ever... I cried but I laughed as well...#blameitonlitsy Well, I‘ve just been onto Amazon and ordered it.... There is a copy in the local library system to order, but I feel this is one I need to own. 2y
LiteraryinLititz @squirrelbrain I absolutely loved it. I wasn‘t familiar with any of the music or the plot details beforehand, and it just blew me away. So emotional! I would see it again in an instant! (edited) 2y
Melissa_J @squirrelbrain @LiteraryinLititz I‘m planning to see Come From Away this fall in Toronto. I must see it now after reading this! 2y
Reviewsbylola I added this to my TBR after seeing a post while back. It sounds fantastic. 2y
