so-soWhile I enjoyed this prequel enough to not be mad about it, it‘s got a different vibe from the rest of the series. Set in 1536 in the court of Anne Boleyn, it‘s obviously missing the Millennial pop culture references that are plentiful in the other books. As an elder Millennial, I‘m biased, of course…but those references are doing a lot of work. Without them, the tone felt oddly humorless. I need the levity of a Spice Girls quip, I guess. 🤷♀️

panI read / listen to this one for two reasons.
Firstly I needed a book that started with a Q for my alphabet challenge; and secondly I was intrigued by this series for quite a while, but wasn't sure if it was something I'd liked.
To be honest I don't feel this book was the best place to start, I didn't know any of the characters and felt quite lost at some points.
Overall I got the gist of the story and I don't think it's for me.

1536 and Anne Boleyn had just been beheaded accused of witchcraft. As we go on the hunt for who betrayed The Queen, we are also told of the history of the last 10 yrs
This didn‘t quite live up to my expectations. I loved the previous books in this series and have completely lost myself in the stories. This prequel was too short for me to lose myself in it.

pickThis prequel to the HMRC series starts with the death of witch Anne Boleyn, then covers events before and after her death. The story adds layers to the other books in the series but doesn‘t require them to be read to enjoy this. I do think some story elements could have been fleshed out a bit more here, making this a lower pick.
pickA standalone in the HMRC series, this goes back to the founding of HMRC through queen Anne Boleyn. It's every bit as good as the first two books in the series with the added bonus of being set in the Tudor era. A big yes!

A prequel novella to Dawson's HMRC series.
It's an alternate historical fantasy based on the historical figures of Anne Boleyn and her ladies-in-waiting.
The story didn't grip me like the other books in the series. It wasn't just the usual depiction of promiscuous Anne or Anne the witch that didn't sit well with me, what pulled me out of the story most often were the anachronisms used ⬇️
