#Guadeloupe #ReadingtheAmericas2023 I should have started with a different book by Condé as her latest and last book is a parody of the life of Jesus who is born a bastard in Guadeloupe. I did not have the background for it either in her voice or humor. The telling comes very much from the verbal story sharing tradition and there are persistent sneers at history and religion written by colonials but it was slow and pointless to my ears.

I made it half way, but I didn't care enough to continue. I thought there were moments of such beautiful, brilliant writing, but just not enough meat to the book. It was ostensibly about Pascal, but he was such a blank space of a person, there was nothing to grab onto. Things happened around or to him, but with no central core to it, it all just felt like a random series of circumstances.

Not my kind of book. A man is in search of his origins and we follow him along his journey. The book touches upon themes as colonization and race but mostly it‘s about the people he meets. Not for me.

In 2006, I first fell in love with Condé! ‘I, Tituba' remains an engrossing 'addition' to Miller's 'The Crucible'. I‘ve taught 'Crossing the Mangrove' 7 times and each time I‘ve discovered something wonderful and engrossing! Condé has been dubbed the 'Grand Dame of Caribbean Literature' and the 'Queen of Caribbean storytelling' for a very good reason! This latest work, translated and transcribed by her husband Richard Philcox, is simply stunning!
