The Bees: Poems | Carol Ann Duffy
19 posts | 9 read | 21 to read
A winner of the Costa Book Award, "beautiful and moving poetry for the real world" (The Guardian) The Bees is Carol Ann Duffy's first collection of new poems as British poet laureate, and the much anticipated successor to the T. S. Eliot Prizewinning Rapture. After the intimate focus of the earlier book, The Bees finds Duffy using her full poetic range: there are drinking songs, love poems, poems to the weather, and poems of political anger. There are elegies, too, for beloved friends andmost movinglyfor the poet's mother. As Duffy's voice rises in this collection, her music intensifies, and every poem patterns itself into song. Woven into and weaving through the book is its presiding spirit: the bee. Sometimes the bee is Duffy's subject, sometimes it strays into the poem or hovers at its edgeand the reader soon begins to anticipate its appearance. In the end, Duffy's point is clear: the bee symbolizes what we have left of grace in the world, and what is most precious and necessary for us to protect. The Bees is Duffy's clearest affirmation yet of her belief in the poem as "secular prayer," as the means by which we remind ourselves of what is most worthy of our attention and concern, our passion and our praise.

I post a lot of political despair on here, it informs/ interferes with a lot of my reading plans and it means a lot to me to have this amazing, supportive, international community to turn to when I feel like the world is ending. my Brexit depression would be a lot worse without you guys.

I don‘t want to only post about it when there‘s more awful news from Westminster tho. Grateful and appreciative of Bavaria‘s awesome decision!! Go Germany!

Leftcoastzen The world has gone mad. Between Brexit and the liar in chief here in the U.S.,loss of expertise everywhere, maddening and sad. 6mo

1. These days, a lot of fantasy. I need the escape!
2. I don‘t think it rises to phobia but I am scared of bees. I get a nasty reaction to stings.
3. Archaeologist
4. 29 and snowing. And snowing. And snowing.
5. On it!

So originally I was going to do another Bingo, a Supernatural POV Bingo. But I was having a very difficult time finding books written from the perspective of “monsters” (outside of vampires and werewolves) so then I just created this buzzwords map which I hate and am planning on covering up with an undecided something. The buzzword anthology is where I pick an anthology compiled of stories about one of my buzzwords each month.

This is such an eclectic mixture of themes in one collection of poetry.
• World War 1
• The war in Iraq
• Love
• Death
• The environment
• Politics
• Mythology

And of course, 🐝

There is something for everyone in this collection.

Some really heavy subjects in this volume of poetry but the way Duffy portrays them are brilliant.

“What will you do now with the gift of your left life?”

RachelO I keep eyeing this one - looks like I need to find a print copy! 2y
Libby1 @RachelO - I don‘t usually read much poetry. Oddly, I can find it a bit intimidating. I saw this at the library and decided to give it a try. Not every poem can be meaningful to everyone, but the poems in this collection that did ring true for me went right to the core. 🌼🐝🌼 2y

“Yes, I think a poem is a spell of kinds
that keeps things living in a written line,
whatever‘s lost or leaving - lock of rhyme -
and so I write and write and write your name.”

Carol Ann Duffy was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 2009.

Chelsey I love the idea of a lock of rhyme! 2y

A bit of a mishmash for today's #seductiveshakespeare. (It does include a #Hamlet reference.) But I read this poem by Carol Ann Duffy last night and thought I'd share.
