Interesting. I have very little knowledge of Puerto Rican history. This was well-written and propulsive. However, sometimes the author describes events from a single person‘s point of view only to fibd he received the information from secondary sources. Sometimes, he makes sweeping statements.

Such an informative history that must be read by all. There's things here that I had a vague knowledge of only because my fam is Puerto Rican, not because I was taught in school. But damn even we don't know the half of it and honestly it's f***ed up. If you want a better understanding of the battle over statehood v nationalism for PR, read this. âââââ

The narrator sounds like Casey Cassem, but in a bad way. I just started listening. Hopefully it will become normal after a while.

Has anyone seen this article? Think maybe a shortage of medications will get PR the help they need?

https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/10/fda-head-hurricane-maria-set-to-hit-hosp...

LibrarianRyan I would hope so. 7y
CatLass007 It will just give the pharmaceutical companies an opportunity to raise drug prices. Nothing will be done to help Puerto Rico. I‘m pessimistic today, I guess. (Shared this article on Facebook.) (edited) 7y
OrangeMooseReads I was thinking the same thing as @CatLass007 and the powers that be don‘t give a hoot about our health or health care anyway. Sadly this probably won‘t make anything better and that makes me angry and sad. 7y

Off-topic: When a lot of crap is going on in the world, I often do one of two things: 1. Read 2. Dust off my organizing skills.

This month, I decided to help a friend organize a massive fundraiser for the hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

If you live near Charlotte #NorthCarolina please consider attending! We are collecting both material & financial donations, so you can also help from anywhere in the nation. #puertorico #hurricanemaria

Pagehabit Hey Jeimy!! We're PageHabit, a book subscription box with a twist. We're going to be doing a very large giveaway soon and we'd love to work with you on promoting it on Litsy. heikemarie Hey @Pagehabit - I'm sure your product and giveaway are cool but given the content of this post, I'd consider refraining. Maybe it's just me but your post comes off as super insensitive. Jeimy, glad you all are safe and please do let us know if there's anything specific we can do for youngish outside of general donations. 7y
gibblr Also @Pagehabit I signed up for a box and was informed via email that my payment FAILED. No kidding. Maybe you heard of that Cat 4 hurricane that ripped directly through our island? Prob won't receive any payment from me in the future either. Too bad, I was looking forward to the box... 7y

Need a break from post-hurricane clean up. I started reading this one-sided, sensationalistic book a while back, but certain decisions based on colonialist-mindset have ired me and inspired me to pick it up.

DivineDiana I am so sad for Puerto Rico right now. 🙠7y
Cinfhen How are you guys holding up in terms of basic needs? Thinking of you all xx 7y

WanderingBookaneer @Cinfhen We've been holed up at home since last Monday. We are doing well. Afraid to go out and face abandoned cars on the road, traffic jams, car crashes, and of waiting in line for over 3 hours for gasoline or ATMs. We keep pushing back the date of when we'll venture out. First we said Saturday, we had considered Wednesday, but are currently talking about Friday or Saturday. 7y
DebinHawaii Thinking of all of you. 💜 7y
SoniaC Sending you guys my prayers. Glad you're ok. 7y

Cinfhen What can we do to help??? I can't imagine what that feels like, afraid to venture outside. Very dystopian 😥I know you have plenty of books but what about food, water? My heart is heavy...sending love ~ 7y
WanderingBookaneer @Cinfhen : Thanks for your concern but neither the US Postal Service or Fed-Ex are delivering. Don't know about UPS. Airport is only allowing 10 flights in and out of the island daily. We should be good for food until next week. We'll venture out before then. We saw trucks clearing debris from the road behind my house yesterday and we heard policemen directing traffic at the intersection. 7y
Cinfhen Please keep me updated on your situation ~ what about the others? Have u heard from them at all? When postal delivery resumes I'd like to send a care package, especially if @Figgy @gibblr are in need as well.... 7y
Bklover Have been thinking of you. Can‘t imagine what this is like for you. Following the news is very disheartening. Sending you guys hugs! 7y
WanderingBookaneer @Cinfhen : I have not heard from @Gissy , but we have been in touch with our fellow Puerto Rican Littens. 7y
Gissy @Cinfhen @WanderingBookaneer I'm ok. I had been at work all this time, staying there because they activate us in emergency situation. I just slept in my apt 3 days ago. I'm exhausted but happy that I could helped. We must continue helping each other and help the country in this recovery process. Many bad things are happening but out there are good people that wants to help. My neighborhood had been amazing. This is a new beginning. 7y

This was a powerful read. Well written and as easy to get into as the subject matter was hard to reconcile. Important read and felt as though it successfully paid homage to Pedro Albizu and those who have their life for freedom.

You guys! All you dnf posts are a freaking bummer today. So I'm celebrating #recommendsday by featuring this really informative and intense book about the history of Puerto Rico and US involvement. They sure didn't teach me this when I was growing up. It's on Hoopla audio and if you're looking to learn about the history you weren't taught, go grab this one.

WhatDeeReads You are killing it on Hoopla audio. 7y
8little_paws @Lucky_LaDee this is actually a backlist post for me. I listened to this.... Either 2016 or 15, but pre-litsy. But seeing as it's recommendsday, I thought it would be nice to give this book a little love here too!! 7y

Follows the nationalist movement in Puerto Rico and the US's capture and control of the island. Not a story widely told or known. Astonishing details about US foreign policy and treatment of Puerto Ricans. Such an important book to help us know the past and work towards a better future.
