A Cross-Country Christmas
A Cross-Country Christmas | Courtney Walsh
4 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Lauren Richmond isn't a fan of Christmas. Which is why she rarely makes the trip home to the Midwest for the holidays. After all, she has plenty to keep her busy--namely, her duties as a set decorator on a TV sitcom. But this December, Lauren's brother and his wife are expecting a baby, so her brother arranges a ride home for her with his good friend, Will. Unfortunately for Lauren, she's been trying to forget college baseball coach and childhood crush Will Sinclair for more than ten years. Now, thanks to her fear of flying, she's stuck in a car with him from California to Illinois. She's circumspect and organized. He's flirty and spontaneous. She's convinced that people don't change. He's trying to prove to her (and himself) that he has. On this cross-country road trip, they'll both discover that history doesn't exactly repeat itself. . . but like any good Christmas carol, it does have a second verse.

This could have been such a cute story because I love the friends to lovers trope. Unfortunately, the female main character absolutely ruined it.

4⭐ an informative read about the plague in London 1665-1667 I thought it was historical fiction, but it read more like nonfiction to me. Hopefully, that still counts.

Cuilin Absolutely it counts. ✅ Sounds like an interesting if solemn read. 8mo
Roary47 Im sorry the female character ruined an otherwise great plot. 🥺 I hate when a character muddles things up. 8mo

Mehso-so

I actually almost bailed on this one and kind of wish I had. Lauren was literally a bitch for no reason for about a third of this book. She was SO rude, self-absorbed, and obnoxious. Will is DOING YOU A FAVOR and you're treating him like trash because of something he said to you when he was stupid drunk ten years ago that he doesn't even remember??? Wow, you're right, that makes you the mature one who has definitely worked through your issues 🙄 ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Will is unfailingly polite, kind, and thoughtful, despite the fact that Lauren says mean stuff to him for no reason, purposefully ignores him, whines about literally everything, and starts the entire road trip by announcing she's figured out their itinerary despite the fact that HE is giving HER a ride to be nice, like sorry, you don't get to tell him where to go and when - it's actually HIS trip??? Ugh. Eventually she somewhat snaps ⬇ 1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) out of it, but then literally as soon as she sees Will talking to a random chick, Lauren (despite having literally no idea what they're saying) immediately does the whole “he hasn't really changed! He's still a player!“ routine where she goes and sulks in her room and then goes back to being a spoiled baby for the entire next day despite the fact that Will DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG (btw they aren't dating! He's allowed to talk to other ⬇ (edited) 1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) women even if you ARE dating!) and HE HAS NO IDEA WHY YOU ARE MAD. Super mature, Lauren. 🙄 One more thing really burned me, spoiler below. All in all, I kept thinking this one was getting better, but then Lauren would do something else to act like a petulant child that sent me right back to being ticked off at her. Will deserves much better! 1y

TheAromaofBooks Turns out the reason Lauren is mad at Will is because ten years ago when they were both in college, Will got totally trashed at a party and 100% sober Lauren gave him a ride home. She's always had a huge crush on him. He drunkenly kisses her and Lauren makes out with him for a while, commenting along the lines of “it was her fantasies come true“. The next day, Will doesn't remember it so Laurent is heartbroken. But I just kept seeing this ⬇ 1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) scenario with the gender roles reversed. Imagine a totally sober Will making out with a super-drunk Lauren because “it was his wildest fantasy for years“. Ugh. I just thought it was weird and a little creepy and of course Lauren tells Will about it and makes HIM feel like the horrible guilty person when SHE was the one taking advantage of him! Gross, and genuinely an unacceptable double-standard. 1y
Andrew65 Well done on getting through it. 🎄🎄🎄 1y
peanutnine Amazing review! This is on my TBR but probably won't make it a priority after reading your thoughts lol 💖 1y
TheAromaofBooks @peanutnine - In fairness, this has over a 4* average on GR and a lot of positive reviews, so maybe I'm just a grouch 😂 1y
DieAReader 🥳🥳🥳 1y
sblbooks @TheAromaofBooks you are definitely not a grouch. I just read this one, and I agree with everything you said! 9mo
TheAromaofBooks @sblbooks - haha thank you! I probably should have labeled this book a pan after all my ranting 😂 9mo

Pickpick

I almost quit this book early on because the female MC was so unreasonable and mean (though she thought she had her reasons). I like a road trip story so I stuck with it and I was glad. It turned into a really sweet Hallmark kind of holiday romance. An easy read that I enjoyed for this time of year.
