Desperation Road
Desperation Road | Michael Farris Smith
In the vein of Daniel Woodrell's Winter's Bone and the works of Ron Rash, a novel set in a tough-and-tumble Mississippi town where drugs, whiskey, guns, and the desire for revenge violently intersect. For eleven years the clock has been ticking for Russell Gaines as he sat in Parchman Penitentiary in the Mississippi Delta. His sentence is now up for manslaughter, and he believes his debt has been paid. But when he returns to his South Mississippi hometown, he faces blood-thirsty revenge. Larry and Walt, older brothers of the young man Russell killed so many years ago, have had the calendar marked. They greet Russell the instant he steps off the bus with hard fists and dire promises. On the same day that Russell comes back, a homeless woman named Maben and her young daughter trudge along the side of the interstate under the punishing summer sun. Desperate and exhausted, the pair spends their last dollar on a room for the night, a night that ends with Maben running down a desolate back road holding a pistol, and a dead deputy sprawled across the asphalt. When Russell later rides up on the scene with the loaded shotgun he's gotten for protection tucked behind the seat of his father's truck, the eyes of the law can't help but look toward him. Along these dark back roads, lives twisted with regret intersect with violent and vengeful consequences as the differences between right and strong shift like the southern sky. DESPERATION ROAD, written in powerful and lyrical prose, is a story of troubled souls bound by a secret that stretches over the years and across the land.

This book left me breathless. Set in southern Mississippi, the novel explores what justice looks like in a broken world. Maben is on the run from a hard life and a fatal encounter with a sleazy cop. Russell, just released from Parchman for a drunken driving manslaughter charge, struggles to adjust to being home. Together, they weigh how to balance their pasts against an uncertain future.

Mehso-so

I have kind of a weird take on this one. It felt like a character study that relied more on the reader than on developing the characters. Not bad, just kinda meh...

KateFulfordAuthor If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

This book really starts so strongly and I was captivated after a few pages. This is Southern noir, full of flawed characters, guns, whisky, and violence. Farris Smith has a talent for dialogue particularly between characters that don't like to talk much.

A solid book rather than an outstanding one. I thought it's early potential was squandered but I would be interested to read more Souther noir.

ClairesReads You‘re getting through the reads atm! 6y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads I know I need to catch up a little bit also this one was pretty short 6y
AceOnRoam I nearly got lung cancer reading this one from what I recall! 6y
Redheadrambles @AceOnRoam it‘s also fairly drinking and driving heavy which was intense considering the reason the main character was in jail in the first place I thought 6y

I really enjoyed this book. The writing was sparse, leaving out the unnecessary, sometimes it's more about what you don't say. Despite this a vivid picture was painted. Couldn't quite get my head around all the drink driving that took place though.

I read the library copy of this book. I love this so much I just had to get my own. It arrived in the mail today. #BookMailBestMail I'm hoping to get it signed at the Mississippi Book Festival next month. I'm taking time off of work and I'm taking a road trip to one state over. And I am more excited about getting to listen to Michael Farris Smith on one of the panels. BTW, I just ordered the rest of his books also. More book mail to come.

Dark, complex and gritty characters come together in this descriptive prose. It seemed as if I could smell the cigarette smoke and hear the sizzle of Coke being poured to mix with bourbon. A story of long ago love and tragedy and beginning again. Although it's a short book, it's been a long time since I've read a book in a day; I couldn't pull myself away. ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️

I went to a book conference and Michael Farris Smith was on a panel with another writer. The other writer spent much of her time telling us all the beauty of this novel. I cannot agree more. This book is full of sadness, however, you just want to keep reading. Smith has created with a sparse concise amount of words a truly formed characterization of two people you will never forget. 💯 BEST BOOK READ ALL YEAR!! Totally recommend this. Read this.

Cinfhen Great review, I'm in!! Thanks for posting 💜 7y

This book presents to you two flawed individuals, their decisionmaking placing them in despicable situations. Things seem to continually get worse for them. As this happens, even knowing their past transgressions, you feel sympathy. Their paths undoubtably cross, and you learn that even from terrible life choices a person can begin again and claw their way back to something better.

Well this one sure isn't a light read. 😬. I feel like the subtitle should be: Desperation Road: A Tale of Southern Misery. There's so much drinking that I feel like I've somehow gotten a contact buzz. I can't see how this could end well. #dark and #depressing

LisaJo This book is my next read. Library hold finally came in. I met the author at a book conference last February. His interview maybe want to read the book. He had quite an interesting southern demeanor. After reading your "blurb "I will make sure I follow up with something very light and happy. 7y
KimM Yes do. I'm reading it for my local book store book club where he recently made an appearance. Apparently his Southern literature is very grim. I'm in the South and some of it is too close to home if you know what I mean. His writing is excellent. He really captures the sense of hopelessness and futility that can be a theme of some small towns. I just listened to the S-Town podcast and it reminds me a little of that. @LisaJo (edited) 7y
LisaJo @KimM I finished the book last night. Wow! One of the best books I've read, if not the best, this year. His writing is hauntingly beautiful. Sad and hopeless and hopeful and so many emotions all at the same time. Captures the feeling of a Southern small town so well. 7y
KimM Yes! Totally agree. @LisaJo We Skyped with the author at book club. I see what you mean by his "interesting Southern demeanor". Very Matthew Mcconaughey-esque. 7y

Redemption, forgiveness, & second chances. Dark and gritty with a deliberate pace. I was able to picture the Mississippi landscapes so vividly in my mind. The characters were so complex; even minor townspeople have distinct personalities. Russell and Maben have been to hell and back & they don't always make the best decisions, but I was rooting for them. How will these they escape their desperate situations? I wasn't sure that they would.

While I never totally lost interest in Desperation Road by Micheal Farris Smith, there were just too many times that the characters' actions just didn't make sense. Also, not enough edge to the ending. Will do a full review on http://www.novelvisits.com/ next week sometime.
