"Don't, please, write and tell me that we're mad. I know it already; and even if I didn't, every friend we possess has pointed it out. My spirit is quailing at the prospect of life at Easter Hartrigg, because I know what pitiful figures we shall cut as landowners in a country quite strange to us."Young Susan Parsons has just moved, with her unmarried brother Oliver, to a newly-inherited property in the Scottish Highlands. Their neighbours prove a mixed bag, including the towering, kindly Jed Armstrong, a farmer whose land 'marches with' theirs, the local vicar and his family, and the three gossipy Pringle sisters, who travel by donkey-drawn cart and get their knives into one and all. After a bumpy start, with a disagreeable cook and her nincompoop daughter as their only help, Susan and Oliver begin to settle in nicely, and find themselves in the midst of romance, confusion, and earthy hilarity.Molly Clavering was for many years the neighbour and friend of bestselling author D.E. Stevenson, and they may well have influenced one another's writing. First published in 1936 (under the pseudonym B. Mollett) and out of print for more than 80 years, Susan Settles Down is one of her most cheerful and vivid romantic comedies. This new edition features an introduction by Elizabeth Crawford.

I have been sloooowly reading this for a couple weeks and I am STRUGGLING y'all! I'm only about halfway through (I've just experienced the Ram Fair- and the pinching of the Squib- which was right after the episode of the Miss Pringles and the goat at Jed's house) and I just don't think I'm feeling it. I know you all ended up feeling it was a low pick by the end but I think I'm going to stop here. 🫣

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Ruthiella I support that decision! 😅👍 3mo
LeahBergen Most definitely let it go if you‘re struggling! 👍 3mo
CarolynM Yeah, it‘s not worth it if it‘s a struggle. It doesn‘t get any better. On to something more enjoyable 😊 3mo

Pickpick

I‘ve finally finished our #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub pick. It was a lowish pick for me (is that a real rating? 😆). Like @quietjenn said, I went in with low expectations and it wasn‘t as bad as I thought it would be. And her work definitely doesn‘t have the charm of her neighbour, DE Stevenson … as @CarolynM said! You‘ve all pretty much summed up my thoughts on this book (and that‘s what I get for chiming in late 😆).

Ruthiella Lowish works for me! 😆 I will think twice about opting for Clavering again-this was my nominee! 🙊 3mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella Oh, I wouldn‘t worry about it. I think we liked the other one we read by her a bit more, didn‘t we? 🤔 I‘ve still read way worse (and probably in the last few months 😆). 3mo
CarolynM There were definitely some bright spots - I loved “the Infantry”, for example @Ruthiella 3mo

Ruthiella @CarolynM That‘s true! It was one of the few attempts at humor that was actually funny. 😅 3mo

LeahBergen @CarolynM They were pretty sweet! 3mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella Yes, I found some of the humour to be a bit slapstick. 🤔 3mo
LeahBergen @Bookwomble I specifically showed the bookmark just for you. 😆😆 #BookmarkMatching 3mo

My expectations for this one were pretty low, based on other #furrowedmiddlebrowclub readers. It helped, so I think I ended up liking it better (or perhaps disliking it less) than many, but it's certainly not going to be a favorite. Lots of -isms at play. Really wish Peggy had been written older and Ronald had faced some consequences...

LeahBergen I feel the same way about that gruesome Ronald, too. 3mo
Ruthiella Glad I could help lower your expectations! 😂 3mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella 😆😆 3mo
CarolynM Yes, it would have been good to see Ronald get his comeuppance 😠 3mo

Although her experience was much more foreboding, something like this might have been what Jo-an was doing when she ate the apple in front of the mirror. Poor thing—she died from her association with Ronald Graham, but no consequences for him.

The only male I could like unreservedly was Tara. 🐶

#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Ruthiella Yes, her story was quite sad. This one was a miss for me, but onwards and upwards! (edited) 4mo
CarolynM Jo-an did not deserve her fate😢 4mo

Anyone have a bingo square for most bizarrely gratuitous homophobia?

Ruthiella Ah, you just got to that weird bit about effete Londoners. Totally jarring. 😖 4mo

Although Molly Clavering gets compared to DE Stevenson, on the strength of this book, at least, her work is darker and less charming. I found it difficult to be enthusiastic about either of the romances because both men engaged in some bad behaviour towards the women early in their acquaintance (in one case one particularly unforgivably). I liked the Susan‘s rejected suitor best of all of them. A low pick. #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Ruthiella Glad it wasn‘t just me! This one really got under my skin. 4mo
LeahBergen I‘m just starting it this week! 4mo
Tamra I‘m over booked currently, so I think this might be the right one to pass on. 4mo
Kimzey Thanks for the review. I doubt I‘ll be able to read this one now, due to work overload. But I did buy a copy, so maybe later! 4mo

Mehso-so

Pictured are Cheviots. I thought they were trees until I looked them up. 🙊🐑

Occasionally I have trouble with the classism and conservative attitudes in our #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub titles and this was one of those times.

The male romantic leads are older than their female counterparts and it‘s subtly implied they should be their masters. I didn‘t find the bits meant to be funny humorous and often it felt quite mean spirited. Overall just OK.

CarolynM I didn‘t think it was funny either. And you‘re right about the sexism and classism in this one. Poor Jo-an got a pretty raw deal all round ☹️ 4mo
Cathythoughts Gorgeous pic 🥰 my granddaughter sings Mary Had A Little Lamb x 4mo
Ruthiella @CarolynM Poor Jo-an was punished for being no better than she ought and for aspiring above her class. 🙁 (edited) 4mo

Ruthiella @Cathythoughts I‘ll bet she is adorable when she sings it! Does she have her granddad‘s musical talent? 4mo
Cathythoughts She is very cute singing it, her pronunciation is a scream. She‘s only 3 and a half , but her grandad says she has a lovely voice ( he could be biased 😂 4mo
LeahBergen Eek! I‘m just about to start. 😬 4mo
Ruthiella @LeahBergen Forewarned is forearmed! 😆 4mo

Hey there #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub reading friends!

Our pick for September is upon us. An unmarried brother and sister set up household in the Scottish Highlands…Susan is nursing a broken heart and Oliver is touchy about his war wound…could romance be in the cards for them? We will find out! 😃

This group is open to all. If anyone wants to be added to or removed from the tag list, let me know.

Ruthiella Thank you! 😊 4mo

Here are my two possibilities for September 2025 for #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub members to choose from.

Both are authors we‘ve read previously. Another light romance set in Scotland from Clavering OR another humorous look at village life from Fair.

Let me know in the comments which one tickles your fancy the most!

Sace I‘m always up for humorous village life. 14mo
kwmg40 I‘ll vote for 14mo
julieclair Another really tough choice. I‘ll go with (edited) 14mo

elkeOriginal Gotta go with Scottish Highlands and Susan! 14mo
Tamra Maybe because it‘s a gloomy November day, but I‘m attracted to Landscape in Sunlight. 🌞 14mo
willaful Hard choice, they both look appealing. But I'll always take romance. 😁 14mo
LeahBergen I want to read both 😆 but I‘ll vote for 14mo
quietjenn I've read the other, so voting for 14mo
Kimzey I want both! 😊 But I choose Scotland and 14mo
CarolynM Since I voted against Molly Clavering before I‘ll join the crowd here 😆 14mo
LeahBergen And the winner is Susan Settles Down! 13mo
