11 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
A sweeping debut novel about the generations of a family that spends summers in a seaside enclave on Maine's rocky coastline, for fans of Elin Hilderbrand, Beatriz Williams, and Sarah Blake. 1944: Maren Larsen is a blonde beauty from a small Minnesota farming town, determined to do her part to help the war effortand to see the world beyond her familys cornfields. As a cadet nurse at Walter Reed Medical Center, shes swept off her feet by Dr. Oliver Demarest, a handsome Boston Brahmin whose family spends summers in an insular community on the rocky coast of Maine. 1970: As the nation grapples with the ongoing conflict in Vietnam, Oliver and Maren are grappling with their fiercely independent seventeen-year-old daughter, Annie, who has fallen for a young man they dont approve of. Before the summer is over a terrible tragedy will strike the Demarestsand in the aftermath, Annie vows never to return to Haven Point. 2008: Annies daughter, Skye, has arrived in Maine to help scatter her mothers ashes. Maren knows that her granddaughter inherited Annies view of Haven Point: despite the wild beauty and quaint customs, the regattas and clambakes and sing-alongs, she finds the placeand the peoplesnobbish and petty. But Maren also knows that Annie never told Skye the whole truth about what happened during that fateful summer. Over seven decades of a changing America, through wars and storms, betrayals and reconciliations, Virginia Hume's Haven Point explores what it means to belong to a place, and to a family, which holds as tightly to its traditions as it does its secrets.

LiteraryinLawrence Awesome choices! I‘ve read Vanishing Half already and would prefer not to reread it. Of the others, here is my order from super excited to meh but will read it if others want to: Addie, Lillian, Therapist, Haven. 2y
shellleigh33 Okay I removed that The Vanishing Half from the list @LiteraryinLawrence 2y
Kayla.Adriena I haven't read any of these and Addie is fine with me! 2y
Mccall0113 I‘ve read Addie. Otherwise not picky 2y
shellleigh33 I am going to go with Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk since @Mccall0113 has read Addie. That way we can all read something no one has read before. Is everyone okay with that one? @Kayla.Adriena @LiteraryinLawrence 2y
LiteraryinLawrence I‘m psyched about Lillian Boxfish! 2y

This was a good story - grandmother, mother, daughter coming to terms with past and present - the mothers “secret“ was not what I thought it would be - theme of forgiveness (of each other and ones self) -

One book closer to a bingo #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks
3 hours read for #20in4 @Andrew65

Over seven decades of a changing America, through wars and storms, betrayals and reconciliations, Virginia Hume's Haven Point explores what it means to belong to a place, and to a family, which holds as tightly to its traditions as it does its secrets. I love family sagas. This one starts in 1944 when Maren Larsen is a cadet nurse at Walter Reed Army Hospital and she meets Dr. Oliver Demarest whose family spends their summers at Haven Point, Maine

EadieB Next we are in 1970 where Oliver and Maren are grappling with their 17 year old daughter, Annie, who has fallen for a young man they don't approve of. In 2008, Annie's daughter, Skye, has brought her mother's ashes to scatter at Haven Point. Maren is forced to tell her granddaughter the whole truth about what happened to her mother, Annie, during the summer of 1970. 3y
EadieB I found myself totally engrossed in the lives of this family and it felt as if I had visited their summer place along with them. This was the author's debut novel but I do look forward to reading more of her books in the future. If you love family sagas, then you will surely enjoy reading this book. 3y

The story takes place over multiple timelines and culminates to a most satisfying ending. There are a lot of dark secrets, that the author expertly peels away the layers of each one. If you like family dramas, put this one high on you TBR list.

Gissy Yes, this is for me!🤗 3y

HAVEN POINT by Virginia Hume
Maren is a cadet nurse at Walter Reed Hospital. A girl from a farm in Minnesota. Just your average farm girl who wanted to make a difference. Maren is a very likable character. You will see her grow and become a strong force. Also a very caring and loving nurse. When she meets Dr Oliver Demarest her life is never the same. They are from different worlds but seem to compliment each other.

robinb Did you enjoy this one? I just finished it! :) 3y
Lsmoore43 @robinb I did. I thought it was very well written. A very emotional yet endearing book. For a debut it was really good. 3y
robinb @Lsmoore43 I thought so too! Lots of turns and twists... 3y

I enjoyed this debut about a family and their summer home on the coast of Maine. It‘s told through alternating chapters featuring Maren and Skye (grandmother/granddaughter). Spanning WWII, the Vietnam War and up to 2008, it speaks to how place/community memories shape us, how differently family members view these places at various times in their lives and how we sometimes focus on the negative in our families rather than the entire picture...🔻

robinb missing the forest for the trees. Poignant but enlightening, sad at times but yet also joyful, this was a wonderful multigenerational saga, and I won‘t soon forget the Demarest family. 4.5/5⭐️ 3y
Crazeedi Sounds really good 3y
