Monticello: A Daughter and Her Father; A Novel
Monticello: A Daughter and Her Father; A Novel | Sally Cabot Gunning
16 posts | 6 read | 32 to read
From the critically acclaimed author of The Widow's War comes a captivating work of literary historical fiction that explores the tenuous relationship between a brilliant and complex father and his devoted daughter Thomas Jefferson and Martha Jefferson Randolph. After the death of her beloved mother, Martha Jefferson spent five years abroad with her father, Thomas Jefferson, on his first diplomatic mission to France. Now, at seventeen, Jefferson s bright, handsome eldest daughter is returning to the lush hills of the family s beloved Virginia plantation, Monticello. While the large, beautiful estate is the same as she remembers, Martha has changed. The young girl that sailed to Europe is now a woman with a heart made heavy by a first love gone wrong. The world around her has also become far more complicated than it once seemed. The doting father she idolized since childhood has begun to pull away. Moving back into political life, he has become distracted by the tumultuous fight for power and troubling new attachments. The home she adores depends on slavery, a practice Martha abhors. But Monticello is burdened by debt, and it cannot survive without the labor of her family s slaves. The exotic distant cousin she is drawn to has a taste for dangerous passions, dark desires that will eventually compromise her own.As her life becomes constrained by the demands of marriage, motherhood, politics, scandal, and her family s increasing impoverishment, Martha yearns to find her way back to the gentle beauty and quiet happiness of the world she once knew at the top of her father s little mountain. This is a well-written fiction character study of Martha Jefferson Randolph. I couldn't breeze thru it like I often do with fiction stories.

While her marriage and motherhood were interesting, I was intrigued by Martha's conflicted views on slavery. She spent her life against slavery yet she owned slaves.

I was also interested in Thomas J's involvement with Sally Hemings and Martha's feelings on this. (I'd love to know more about Hemings.)

Reviewsbylola I've been curious about this one. Sounds like I should give it a go! 7y
theladygreer I was just at Monticello last week and it made me very curious about Martha, so this sounds good to me! 7y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads The Heminges of Monticello by Annette Gordon-Reed is one of my favorite books. It won the Pulitzer Prize @theladygreer (edited) 7y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I enjoyed this book but not so sure that Martha was against slavery. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 3! This is a work of literary historical fiction set after Revolution, focusing on the very real relationship between Thomas Jefferson & his daughter, Martha. She accompanies her widowed father to Europe, returning to find Monticello in debt & the world a complicated place. As her father's politics pull on him, she marries Thomas Randolph, watches Sally Hemmings, & works to preserve the beloved home. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Finished this one last night (okay, it was technically this morning) and loved it. It's a very thorough character study of Martha Jefferson Rabdolph and a must-read for fans of historical fiction set in the early days of the US. #books #monticello #SallyCabotGunning #tlcbooktours #bookrecommendation

I loved hearing about the life of Thomas Jefferson's oldest daughter, Martha. From the time she returns from France as a young woman to her father's death, Monticello provides a fictionalized account of Martha's life including her feelings for the relationship her father has with his slave, Sally Hemmings. For fans of Loving Frank by Nancy Horan or The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin.
