Holy. Wow. I have no words. This is beautiful. And sad. And very, very violent. One of the best graphic novels I've read. Ever. So. Good.
#BookMail Pt1 Finally getting to the end of my #NewYearBookBank order, the hubs is starting to steam a bit at the ears. He just doesn‘t get that “tsundoku” is a way of life🧘🏻♀️I absolutely loved the first in this graphic novel series, the art is gorgeous and the storyline is just as good, with elements of fantasy, folklore & warrior culture. Highly recommend👍
Maika Halfwolf continues on her quest to find answers about her mother. She journeys with pirates to a poisoned island and battles with an ancient exiled there. The art remains magnificent, and the lore is becoming easier to understand as the story moves along. I love the character of Kippa, the fox girl.
The art in this fantasy series is absolutely stunning and intricate. Very Art Deco/steampunk but set in an alternate Asia-like continent with a matriarchal society. The story intrigued me but there‘s still a lot more world building to do so I think that slowed it down a bit. But there‘s lots of magic and cats and witches and monsters so I‘m sticking with it.
4.5/5⭐ I want to fall into the artwork & never come out. It's not often I feel like I'm truly entering another world while reading. The dark elements are woven in wonderfully with the lighter, but neither diminishes the other. I simply adore how many female characters there are, in every possible role you can imagine. I once assumed a new character would be a man, but nope! This book challenges those assumptions. #projectnew #atozreadathon
Read for #24b4monday and am still loving the art style, the use of muted colors among the bright pops of color, and the odd but intricate storyline that has me hooked still.
This volume ends with a cliffhanger that i can't wait to get to so heading over to #hoopla to find it!
I have finished my #goodreadschallenge! All bonus reads from now on :)
I do not read that many graphic novels, just somehow ended up with them now. Reading through Monstress again did it :)
Thank you #Hoopla for having my graphic novels to read.
I‘m not entirely sure this should have been a graphic novel. The story seems very interesting, but there is so much world in the story that isn‘t explained (other than the info-dump parts) that it‘s sometimes tricky to say what‘s actually going on. Perhaps a novel would have been a better medium? Or add a narrator, at least? The art is gorgeous, though, and I very much like the cat and Fox.
Started this new series the other day and I‘m so glad I did! The artwork is absolutely stunning. The story was a bit confusing for me at first (and still kinda is), but it did find clear up and find its way. I‘m hoping it gets better with the next volume. Either way, if you like beautiful artwork and steampunk fantasy, you‘ll probably like this.
I enjoyed this one so much more than the first. One, for obvious reasons, I am now comfortable and understand the world this is placed it. Two, the Isle of Bones and more information/background on the gods and the different types of creatures in this world which I loved!

Fantasy-steampunk graphic novel about surviving in a war-torn world fueled by conflict between witchy humans and Arcanics (descended from human and immortal parents). The witches have enslaved the Arcanics and harvest their body parts in order to extract a powerful substance called lilium.
Maika Halfwolf is a teenaged Arcanic set on revenge. She carries a dark secret within her that she doesn‘t understand and can‘t control.
We‘re having the most incredible thunderstorm this evening (thank goodness— this heat was getting unbearable) and I needed something a bit darker to match. I love the illustrations in Monstress, and it walks that line of how much horror/gore I can handle. I‘m still not sure I totally grasp the story, but in another volume or two I‘ll do a back-to-back reread and really puzzle through it.
Cats are the great mystery, born in that space where shadow meets light... that borderland of dreams and death, and death and life. No door is closed against us. No secret can defy us. We exist in every world, every universe, every possibility. We cannot be denied, not even by the dead. We are fucking glorious
There was a bit too much in this single volume but the beautiful art and the talking cats get this graphic novel a 4/5 from me.
#LunchAndABook The artwork in this graphic novel is so intricately detailed. While I found the beginning of the book to be quite confusing, the author gave me just enough plot twists and hints to keep me hanging on. She has created such a fantastical and complicated world that I am excited to read more about! Good thing I have vol 2 ready to go from @TracyReadsBooks 🤓😍 #Booked2018 #Steampunk
Just recently getting into graphic novels hardcore. I‘ve read Lumberjanes, Saga, Giant Days, and the one showing.
Please give m recommendations of your favorite one, or one that are must reads!
The art in this book is gorgeous. 😍
I‘m not entirely gripped by the story yet though so not sure if I‘ll be picking up volume 2. Only halfway through though.....
I love everything about this series. Complex characters and stories. Stunning artwork. I need more. Now. Please and thank you. 😄
