The Trouble with Peace
The Trouble with Peace | Joe Abercrombie
10 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
The sequel to the New York Times bestselling A Little Hatred from epic fantasy master Joe Abercrombie. Conspiracy. Betrayal. Rebellion. Peace is just another kind of battlefield . . . Savine dan Glokta, once Adua's most powerful investor, finds her judgement, fortune and reputation in tatters. But she still has all her ambitions, and no scruple will be permitted to stand in her way. For heroes like Leo dan Brock and Stour Nightfall, only happy with swords drawn, peace is an ordeal to end as soon as possible. But grievances must be nursed, power seized and allies gathered first, while Rikke must master the power of the Long Eye . . . before it kills her. Unrest worms into every layer of society. The Breakers still lurk in the shadows, plotting to free the common man from his shackles, while noblemen bicker for their own advantage. Orso struggles to find a safe path through the maze of knives that is politics, only for his enemies, and his debts, to multiply. The old ways are swept aside, and the old leaders with them, but those who would seize the reins of power will find no alliance, no friendship, and no peace lasts forever. Wow. Abercrombie rarely disappoints, and he‘s at the top of his form here. Fantasy with MANY fascinating, morally grey characters who consistently surprise? Oh yes. You can almost smell the gunpowder (yes, there is) and taste the blood in your mouth from that dagger someone slipped in your back. They call Abercrombie Lord Grimdark for a reason. If that‘s your jam, this book is as good as it gets. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #d100

Lauranahe Black stone heart looks interesting. If we do The Trouble with Peace, I‘ll have to read book 1 first. (Did you know it‘s book 2 of a trilogy?). Which I‘m totally for, the trilogy looks fun. 2y
Littlewolf1 I am down for anything… They all look good. I am the same with the trouble with peace, I love Joe Abercrombie (I even included him on my list) but I would need to read book 1 first, which I can certainly do 2y
LitStephanie @Littlewolf1 @Roary47 @Lauranahe ok pretend it shows A Little Hatred (the first in the series) by Joe Abercrombie up there instead of The Trouble with Peace. Does that change your preferences? I totally understand not wanting to jump in the middle. 2y

Littlewolf1 Yep… I would pick A Little Hatred… but again, good with whatever you choose 2y
Roary47 So my top pick would be the Monster of Elendhaven the monster sounds spooky. My second pick would be Black stone heart. The last one even with book one is sounds fine just not as exciting as the other two. 2y
LitStephanie @Roary47 @Lauranahe @Littlewolf1 I could not find a copy of Black Stone Heart and am going with The Monster of Elendhaven. 😁 2y
Roary47 Awww man I‘m sorry 😢,but woot woot bring on the monsters! 2y

So that top ten fantasy list .. I tried to forget as I know I‘ll probably forget more of these than sci-fi! Same with this list, just whatever pops into my head as something I‘d happily relisten to or reread. Harry Potter, The Age of Madness & The Name of the Wind are great audiobooks .. ok the only audio I don‘t recommend & it‘s just a personal opinion is GoT. I have tried to start that audio many times! Don‘t like his voice. Thank you @Avanders

Twainy DAMMMMMIT!! Dresden Files!! How could I forget that awesome series?!!! 😫 3y
Twainy Alice in Wonderland, Princess Bride, The Hobbit, LOTR .... who can narrow it down to TEN? 🤨 😆 3y
wanderinglynn It‘s just too hard to name only 10. 3y
Twainy @wanderinglynn agreed .. I‘d like to see some more top “tens”! It‘s really interesting to see what others love! WoT! NPC‘s! 3y
Avanders Very smart doing separate sci fi and fantasy lists! 😁😁 I really enjoyed that Dorothy Must Die series... just clever and fun. Yay, more to add to my TBR! 👏🏽👏🏽 3y

🎧📚 Abercrombie writes from the hip. It‘s all ...

IN.
YOUR.
FACE.

Be prepared to be shocked. Adult language & situations, sex & not pretty romantic sex, blood, death, betrayal, war, more betrayal.

No political correctness. Characters are awful human beings with a shade of shiny goodness under a dark bushel. Alliances will be made & destroyed.

If you‘re looking for eloquent prose or an epic fantasy 😆 you won‘t find it here.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👇🏻

Twainy This story is miserable & depressing and dark. Grim dark. Dark dark! It‘s sarcastic, sad, repulsive & yet a tiny sick part of me found so much of it also hilarious. A plethora of foreshadowing & call backs. I really can‘t wait for book 3, The Wisdom of Crowds! Guilty pleasure? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
bibliobliss It sounds like a great time!! 3y
Twainy @Readage I can‘t emphasize enough, it‘s dark, it‘s wrong, it‘s probably offensive to most ... not for the faint of heart. The narration adds a star to the rating as it‘s arguably perfect. 🖤 3y

bibliobliss @Twainy You haven't said anything that has scared me!! 😂 3y
claudiuo Great review. Now I have to check it out... 3y
Twainy @claudiuo thank you, you‘ve been warned 😉😆 The First Law trilogy & then after that the 3 audiobooks in the First Law World were highly recommended to me but I jumped in with the 1st book in this trilogy, A Little Hatred. So you don‘t have to start at the beginning but those books probably have the backstory of the characters who are only mentioned in these books. I listen to these books at 1.5 speed. The narration is perfection. Good luck. 3y
claudiuo @Twainy great, thanks for letting me know I can start with the new trilogy. Just got the audiobook from library. Thank you! (edited) 3y

Rikke after finding out that the only thing that will hold back the third eye (premonitions) that are slowly killing her is having runes permanently tattooed on her face:

“There‘s just no going back from tattoos on your face, is there?”

OK I guess you need the narrator‘s biting sarcasm to get the full humor in that ... loving listening to this book while I work on a drawing. 🖤💕🖤

🎧 So I‘ve put this book off for far too long. Sometimes I don‘t want to start a book because it means I‘ll finish it far too soon. 😫 I know. Dumb reason.

Still.

I‘ve read & listened to A Little Hatred several times. It‘s by far a superior audiobook! Yes it‘s still grim dark 😁

I can‘t talk about this book without wrecking the first book that ended on such a horribly dark & hilarious moment. 👇🏻

Twainy I LOVE these characters. They are horrible yet lovable people and voiced perfectly by the narrator.

I have a few other books started. There are 74 Rebels episodes to finish before I restart Thrawn ... 😁

I‘m excited to spend all day Saturday listening to this audiobook & watching 65 more Star Wars cartoons ... 💕🖤🎉

1. If I love the book it‘s mine forever & if I don‘t love it then I will pass it on to my niece who will keep it as she‘s inherited my love of books & a lot of my actual books 😆 I have the smaller home. 😫

2. I‘m rereading A Little Hatred AND listening to it on Audible in anticipation of book two, The Trouble With Peace by Joe Abercrombie which comes out in one week!! W00T! 😁
