Okay literary friends and #teachersoflitsy....I‘m looking for a short story that uses flashback that would be appropriate for a middle school audience. I immediately thought of “An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge,” but I think the content is a bit too dark for my 7th graders. I would love any and all ideas 😘

Alfoster Thinking...will get back to you!🤪 5y
Bookworm83 @Alfoster Thank you!! (edited) 5y
Alfoster Would A Christmas Carol work? Too long since I‘ve taught it...but given the season? Not sure. 5y

merelybookish Is Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" too mature? It's been a while since I've read it. 5y
LiteraryinLawrence When I taught 7th grade, some of the short stories I used were “The Veldt” and “Harrison Bergeron.” I think one or both has a flashback? 5y
dragondrool A google search suggested Raymond's Run, The Monkey's Paw, and The Sound of Thunder. 5y
ElishaLovesBooks Raymond‘s Run is a great story! Gary Soto is also good- he has a story called Seventh Grade but I don‘t remember if it has flashbacks. The Lottery is also great and The Ransom of Red Chief (but that‘s really better for teaching irony). I‘ll keep thinking! 5y
ElishaLovesBooks Maybe All Summer in a Day? Ray Bradbury has so many good ones! 5y
Tamra Oh my, such a wonderful masterpiece of a story. I recall reading it right about that age. Somewhere 7th - 9th. These days, I don‘t think it‘s too dark. 5y
LiteraryinLawrence @ElishaLovesBooks Great idea! Definitely fine for 7th grade. 5y
LindaMcGraw16 @Bookworm83 We used to show literature films to our fifth graders and we did The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge as well as The Monkey‘s Paw. 5y

I'm having trouble falling asleep, even though it's past midnight here, and so I'm reading the second half of this short story. I learned a new word while I'm at it! I quite like this word and will aim to use it soon. #litsypartyofone #serialreader

What to do when you only manage to sleep in one extra hour on a Saturday but it's too cold at 7 AM to get out of bed? Start a new short story on #serialreader, of course! I love this app so much. 😍 #litsypartyofone

MinDea What is this app? 6y
Samary I love that app! 6y
Samary @MinDea it‘s called Serial Reader 6y

MinDea @Samary but what is it? What kind of books does it have and how does it work? 6y
Caterina @MinDea It sends you daily issues that take about 10 minutes to read of public domain books and short stories. It's free, but there's a $2.99 paid upgrade available too. It has a wide variety of books available and is perfect for smaller chunks of time in your day to read. 6y
MinDea Cool. Thanks! 6y
Caterina @MinDea You're welcome! 😊 6y
Samary @MinDea @Caterina I was surprised at the selection! 6y

A quick confusing read that I found very interesting. Thankful one of my classes this semester is focused around reading to keep me sane.

#booktober Day 17 Confession: I struggle with #shortstories. I usually want more. 😕 I picked this one to try out the Serial Reader app and enjoyed it.
