I used some of my Christmas gift card on these, a graphic novel and a graphic memoir. I‘m looking forward to reading them!

This is a heartfelt memoir in mostly drawings about several years in her young adulthood as her career and personal life were taking off.
She distills feelings SO well in one or two drawings! Noelle struggled with depression, coming out, gender confusion, religion, etc so it is not light reading.
But as a fan of her graphic novels, I am glad I read more about her in her own words/images. She is pretty amazing and brave to put herself out there.

elkeOriginal She uses all pronouns now so I used ‘her‘ as she identified herself in this book. FYI before you correct me 😉 3w
elkeOriginal This also was my first #pantone2022 title! #bubblegum @Clwojick 3w

This graphic memoir, told in the format of Noelle Stevenson‘s “Year in Review” updates from 2011-2019 is earnest and vulnerable…but somehow still guarded. It‘s hard to feel, as a reader, that you‘re not getting the complete story (& not as a literary device, either)…but to also feel, as an understanding person, that maybe you‘re not owed that.

*Continued 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: The pieces we‘re given are well-told. Stevenson‘s quest for authenticity (artistic & personal), struggles with mental health, and lust for life & love are all evident. 2mo

I appreciate this doodle, as I was once (pre-Bones) the Treasurer of an “I Love David Boreanaz Fan Club.”

We all had matching t-shirts adorned with puffy-painted smiley faces with fangs.

*Note: I don‘t know why I was elected Treasurer. I‘m not a numbers gal. But I suspect my acceptance of the position had something to do with the sparkly pink Kaboodle in which we kept our (lemonade sale) funds. Très chic.

FantasyChick I feel so seen now 😆 I also forget to get my water in too often. I was doing good at the office but since I've been working from home....I just stand in the shower longer and hope my pores suck up the moisture 🤣🤣 2mo

I just found out that Noelle Stevenson is married to Molly Knox Ostertag and they are now my favorite lesbian couple.

GondorGirl The wedding photos they posted online are beautiful. They're so adorable and talented. 🧡🧡 5mo

This was so interesting… I love the author and am a big Lumberjanes/She-ra fan… and it‘s poignant reading this knowing her journey from the end onwards (she/he/they are transitioning, sort of - they explain it better than me!) I think there is a lot to mull over here for people from religious backgrounds too. I read it digitally but would like to reread in paper. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I enjoyed this one but was slightly frustrated at some of the detail that was withheld (ie. mentioning secret projects but not necessarily what they were). Glad the library got this one in.

Hmm - seems an odd choice to put this in with the junior graphic novels (but this is what happens when you outsource orders and cataloguing)

Kenyazero ???"I see you author The Lumberjanes. All of your work must be teen and YA" 14mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Kenyazero, I think that‘s probably the logic that landed this in junior but I think it would be better appreciated and just more at home in the teen or adult collection. 14mo

Noelle Stevenson is the author of Nimona, a co-creator of The Lumberjanes, and showrunner for She-Ra. In her moving “memoir in pictures” that covers highlights and low points from age 17 to 27, she mostly addresses her younger selves, focusing on the ways she grows and changes. She writes honestly about creative drive, steps to improve her mental health, coming to terms with failure, and coming out of the closet. #LGBTQ #comics

An example of what I meant in my previous post about the way John Gardner‘s Grendel, told from the point of view of a monster, links to other books I‘m reading.

I hate to rate a memoir poorly because it feels like a judgment on the person but 🤷‍♀️ I think Noelle Stevenson is a fab creator and she definitely has a story to tell. The problem is, this didn't feel like she was telling it. She purposefully withholds details (which, I get it, no one owes anybody their private business but then why write a memoir?) and it seems like more of a compilation than a new effort to reflect upon and share her story.

monalyisha I had the exact same response! 2mo

This book made me cry this morning. I felt so seen.
The book was both so uplifting and reassuring.
It felt like such a comfort that this person I admire so much struggles with self image as much as I do. "It keeps you warm. It eats you alive." Spoke to me so much more than thought it would. I want to reread immediate. Thank you Noelle for this book. The conversation between the younger self and the older self ment so much.

There‘s this part of The Good Place where Eleanor tells Micheal “We‘re all a little bit sad, all the time” and it‘s such an honest moment that it sticks with me. The Fire Never Goes Out hits me in the same way, this (sometimes) tiny grain of desolation, that can‘t be washed away.

An intimate illustrated memoir from the creator of Nimona and She-Ra about her early rise to fame, her struggles with her sexuality, and her experiences with mental illness. I'm a big fan of Stevenson and thoroughly enjoyed this look back at her work over the years and her recounting of her experiences so far. It's a quick read with some profound sentiments I think we can all benefit from.

I have loved Noelle Stevenson the day I picked up Nimona. Then I picked up Lumberjanes and then She-Ra came out as the years have passed. She wrote this as a look back through the years and how mental illness played a part, her story as a lesbian and the happy ending. It‘s sweet, and has cute drawings, and probably the most fun memoir I‘ve read this year!

Amazing, raw, powerful graphic memoir by the Uber-talented Noelle Stevenson. It covers only a few years, but it‘s the years that saw her take off professionally while also embracing her sexuality and mental health. Highly recommend. #booked2020 #newin2020 #bookishbingo #borrowedfromdigitallibrary
