pickI loved this book, so engaging. I flew through it & was taken up completely with the story. Milly is widowed, but not the wealthy woman she might have been, for she has sinned - Funny, sad , clever , insightful, with memorable details. One of my most enjoyable reads this year.

I‘m almost done this 1929 von Arnim (author of The Enchanted April) novel and it‘s on its way to being a 5-star read.
Milly, middle-aged and recently widowed, inherits only £200 from her husband‘s vast estate. As the will says, “She‘ll know why”. Her extended family of in-laws is sent into a scandalized flap and begin to try to cover up the scandal. It‘s a novel about adultery and prudery, but deliciously funny.
The Expiation bookmark that came with my Persephone biannual looks perfect with my current read! I got a surprise, too, @BarbaraBB 😁
