The Silent Girls
The Silent Girls | Eric Rickstad
New York Times and USA Today BestsellerWith the dead of a bitter Vermont winter closing in, evil is alive and well . . .Frank Rath thought he was done with murder when he turned in his detective's badge to become a private investigator and raise a daughter alone. Then the police in his remote rural community of Canaan find an '89 Monte Carlo abandoned by the side of the road, and the beautiful teenage girl who owned the car seems to have disappeared without a trace.Soon Rath's investigation brings him face-to-face with the darkest abominations of the human soul. With the consequences of his violent and painful past plaguing him, and young women with secrets vanishing one by one, he discovers once again that even in the smallest towns on the map, evil lurks everywhere—and no one is safe.Morally complex, seething with wickedness and mystery, and rich in gritty atmosphere and electrifying plot turns, The Silent Girls marks the return of critically acclaimed author Eric Rickstad. Readers of Ian Rankin, Jo Nesbø, and Greg Iles will love this book and find themselves breathless at the incendiary, ambitious, and unforgettable story.

The story itself was decent, what pushed it over into good for me was the narration. R C Bray has that voice that can honestly make you want him to just read the dictionary to you. His narration made me want to read the third book in the series.

I liked this book, honestly I did. And I'm all for cliffhanger endings, but this goes to far. I NEED CLOSURE. That being said, it kept me on my toes. Each plot twist could be traced to a hint given in the pages prior so nothing seemed contrived. First time reading this author and would definitely pick up another of his books. 4/5🌟 #ericrickstad #canaries

I just finished this on audio, and it was very good. The book started off with a gruesome scene that really drew me in, and it never slowed down. I liked the way the author tied everything together. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, so I am going to see if there is a follow-up.

Don't let the low score on this (36%) turn you off. It was twisty and suspenseful. The beginning will probably give me nightmares especially around Halloween. It ended on a cliffhanger, but don't fret, book 2 will be released next month. It is a bit slow in the middle but all the storylines tie up.

Melissa_J I liked this one, too. Book 2 has been out here since last year though, funny it's not out in US yet. 2y
Books_Wine_Repeat @Melissa_J Really?! I wonder why? Goodreads has it listed as 09/12/17 release. ...I liked it a lot! I'm looking forward to book 2. 2y
Melissa_J I just looked it up. The book I thought was the second is about Sonja. The one coming out next month is the actual sequel to this one and features both Frank and Sonja. 2y

Melissa_J Excellent! I guess I should read it soon, too, since I've had it on my shelf since it came out 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Scurvygirl I liked this one too! Good to know the next one is coming out soon. 2y

I'll give this a pick but it's not a highly enthusiastic pick, like halfway between pick and so-so. There were parts I found really clever, but there was so much going on, it would have been nice to have more focus. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger but I don't really have any interest in hunting down the next one. A quick read, I just found it inconsistent.

Once I got past the whole 'true detective' thing I really enjoyed this creepy thriller about missing girls in Vermont. Very unsettling, especially the ending.

I'm getting kind of tired of the whole - this is the next whatever. This book has a blurb on the front that says 'Vermont's own True Detective'. It's not. It's a good mystery/thriller that's pretty messed up. I don't want to read something with something else in my head. #justsayin

Hooked_on_books I agree! And often the parallels are just not correct. Let the book stand on its own. Or, if one must, put something like, "If you liked _____, you'll like this." 2y

There's so many to look forward to, but these are the ones I'm counting down for! Of course one of them was literally JUST announced for publication in September. That's so far! #mostanticipatedreads #seasonsreadings2016

I do have an ereader (Nexus 7), although I only use it on trips or for galleys - I probably only use it four or five times a year! I discovered this author through the Kindle store and LOVE his books, but is it weird that i only read the e versions? His sequel to this one is coming out late 2017 - I can't wait! #seasonsreadings2016 #ereader #e-reader

RealLifeReading Oh!!! You are the only other person I've seen with a Nexus 7!!! I really love mine. 3y
Jenshootsweddings @RealLifeReading I love mine too! It's actually my second one - I dropped my first one and just straight out replaced it without looking at other options. 3y

Entertaining but convoluted. No character development. Entirely plot driven. Another decent quick read (or audiobook listen).

A lot of mystery novels rely on dumb luck.:..this one a little too much so.
