The Basketball Diaries
The Basketball Diaries | Jim Carroll
15 posts | 17 read | 10 to read
Today, Jim Carroll is a highly renowned poet and rock musician. But in the mid-1960s, during his coming-of-age from twelve to fifteen, he was a rebellious teenager making a place and a name for himself on the unforgiving streets of New York City. During those years, he chronicled his experiences, and the result is a diary of unparalleled candor that conveys his alternately hilarious and terrifying teenage existence. Here is Carroll prowling New York City--playing basketball, getting high, getting hooked, and searching for something pure.--lastgasp.com.

One of my favorite movies as a teenager was Leonardo DiCaprio's 1995 breakout role in the film adaptation of Jim Carroll's autobiographical work chronicling his descent into drug addiction at 13 years of age. I never read the book, but it's considered a classic piece of adolescent literature. #rockinmay #cocaine

Up in the country for the weekend and took some L.S.D. again with a friend at midnight. All night we walked on dirt roads and fields lit only by moon and star glow and I watched the trees to see which were friendly and which were evil. We could tell easily, and sat finally near a beautiful willow and watched its sad sway and its special glow hours until morning.

My office mate used to talk to me allllll of the time about this movie. I have to be in the mood to watch intense movies but I was so excited to find out it was a book as well. #bookaboutbasketball #notreallyentirelyaboutbasketball #marchmadness #day4

vivastory This is the movie that sparked my interest in poetry. I was able to eventually see Jim Carroll read his work at St. Mark's in 2005. 7y

Trying to figure out what Litsy is all about. Here's what I'm reading. It's a favorite from my high school years, which means it's been over 10 years since I read it last 😬

Carroll's style definitely shines in some entries in the Diaries, however his poetry is much more up my alley. Mostly this book made me feel like I needed a shower. Dark, gritty, disturbing, and with an aftertaste like a mouthful of gravel. You'll need a stiff drink.
