Unless
Unless | Carol Shields
Unless youre lucky, unless youre healthy, fertile, unless youre loved and fed, unless youre offered what others are offered, you go down in the darkness, down to despair. Reta Winters has many reasons to be happy: Her three almost grown daughters. Her twenty-year relationship with their father. Her work translating the larger-than-life French intellectual and feminist Danielle Westerman. Her modest success with a novel of her own, and the clamour of her American publisher for a sequel. Then in the spring of her forty-fourth year, all the quiet satisfactions of her well-lived life disappear in a moment: her eldest daughter Norah suddenly runs from the family and ends up mute and begging on a Toronto street corner, with a hand-lettered sign reading GOODNESS around her neck. GOODNESS. With the inconceivable loss of her daughter like a lump in her throat, Reta tackles the mystery of this message. What in this world has broken Norah, and what could bring her back to the provisional safety of home? Retas wit is the weapon she most often brandishes as she kicks against the pricks that have brought her daughter down: Carol Shields brings us Retas voice in all its poignancy, outrage and droll humour. Piercing and sad, astute and evocative, full of tenderness and laughter, Unless will stand with The Stone Diaries in the canon of Carol Shieldss fiction.

How much do you read about a book before starting it? Often I don‘t even read the synopsis after hearing someone say “read this book!” So, I checked this out on Libby after hearing Ann Patchett recommend it on IG. I began reading and thought it was a great memoir. Surprise! At 25% I saw “a novel” on the cover😂 I‘m impressed because it read as a believable memoir (my fav). Reminiscent of Anne Tyler. Not big on plot; well developed characters.

Ruthiella I like it best when I know nothing before picking up a book. It‘s rare anymore! 1y
BarbaraBB I read a lot of Carol Shields for a while but don‘t remember much about this one unfortunately 1y
CarolynM I read a few of hers years ago and enjoyed them, but like @BarbaraBB I don‘t remember much. 1y
jlhammar Oh good, I've got this on my shelves! Looking forward to it. I loved 1y

Unless by Carol Shields. Book 9 of 2021.

This was my first dislike of the year. It was slow and just really dull. I did like the ending but the lead up just was not worth it.

This is my first by Carol Shields, and I‘m an instant fan. This book is about family, feminism, the writing process, powerlessness. Shields had a true mastery of language and style; I‘m constantly amazed by her prose.

It‘s a rainy and gloomy day here so Dobby is settling in for some cuddles while I try to finish this today so I can add to March‘s book report 🥰

Though I'm liking this, I'm also not in the mood to put the effort in of close reading just now.... So temporary #hibernation and some quick and easy reads for now.
Thanks for being my book rest Rosie #dogsoflitsy

TrishB Yep, reading without too much effort is called for at the moment. 4y
Balibee146 @TrishB agreed! Every year I get recurrent migraine as we move into Autumn so going easy on myself lol 😜 4y

It took me awhile to get into this, the style is vague yet stilted. But the style and transition word chapter titles (yet, nonetheless, thus, etc) match the feelings of Reta, the narrator. Reta has a long and solid relationship with an elderly feminist whose memoirs she translates. She is writing the sequel to her own novel. And she constantly questions and examines her relationships w/her 3 girls, the oldest is really struggling. #1001books

I revisited this beautiful book via audiobook. Carol Shields creates such a compelling narrative about mothers and daughters; about the search for goodness in the world; about how the world is hard-wired to be tricky for girls and women. A great, painful-at-times read!

Blaire I really liked this one and its portrayal of mother daughter relationships, but most of my book club gave it a thumbs down. Nice to find another fan. (edited) 6y

This book is an amazing exploration of motherhood and mother-daughter relationships, as well as the importance of words and communication. Overall, an impressive novel that I truly enjoyed. I‘m looking forward to reading Shields‘ other work.

⭐️⭐️
This is nominally a story about a daughters flight into vagrancy and her search for "GOODNESS". It seems to me to be more concerned with the struggles of woman writers to be taken seriously. Is this meant to be ironic ?, a book about a feminist writer writing what seems like escapist romantic fiction, while waxing lyrical about housework. I just plain gave up trying to dissect all the layers of potential meaning.
Also poor Norah.

ClairesReads Hope the next one is better for you! 6y
Redheadrambles I know, at the moment it‘s sort “love one” “hate the next one” 😂 6y
Marchpane Oh dear. I have the Stone Diaries in my TBR - hopefully it's not as dire? 6y
Redheadrambles @Marchpane oooh yes I really am keen for The Stone Diaries as there is no doubt the woman writes beautifully. I just think this one was eh or maybe just a little dated in its feminism! I don‘t know 🤷‍♀️ 6y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles bodes well for the next one then 😂😂 6y

Bailedbailed

Dear Carol, you were one of my very most favorite writers back in the 1990s. This is the third book of yours I've tried in the last year or so and deeply disliked. It happens. Thank you for all the warm memories. Love, Shawn

(Bailed less than 10% of the way in.)

merelybookish What about her writing don't you like now? 7y
shawnmooney @merelybookish There is a middle class airy-fairy niceness to her writing that irritates the heck out of me, now: every whimsical, well wrought sentence seems a defense against the darkness. 7y
merelybookish @shawnmooney Interesting how our tastes change over time. I haven't read her since the 1990s either when The Stone Diaries was all the rage. I remember liking it but wondering a bit about all the hype. 7y

TOKYO USED BOOKSTORE HAUL - BOOK 10 OF 15

I have a signed first edition of this, her last novel, in storage back in Canada. I never got around to reading it, and that's why I bought this five dollar softcover to read along while listening to the audiobook on TuneIn.

Lindy I really like this one. The story has stuck with me . 7y

This was a harder read than I expected. Definitely a thinking book that I'll have to re-read at some point in the future since the message of the book becomes clearer towards the end.

I would straight up come to blows with anyone over my assertion that this is Carol Shields' very best work. Book three of my student's guided study reading list.

Jilanna Unless, The Republic of Love and The Stone Diaries are my top three of hers. I must be due for a re-read... Initially, I didn't like The Stone Diaries but I was in a gerontology class a few weeks later (so...1998ish) and when asked about a particular issue, I almost said, "Well, my friend..." Before catching myself and realizing it was the woman in the book. :D 8y

Blaire I love unless. Picked it for my feminist book club last year...was surprised by the mixed reception it got from my book club. 8y

When I'm reading a book, I love it when I discover ties in it to what is going on in the world around me, especially when it's not a front list title anymore.
