Ring the Hill
Ring the Hill | Tom Cox
7 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
A hill is not a mountain. You climb it for you, then you put it quietly inside you, in a cupboard marked Quite A Lot Of Hills where it makes its infinitesimal mark on who you are. Ring the Hill is a book written around, and about, hills: it includes a northern hill, a hill that never ends and the smallest hill in England. Each chapter takes a type of hill whether its a knoll, cap, cliff, tor or even a mere bump as a starting point for one of Toms characteristically unpredictable and wide-ranging explorations. Toms lyrical, candid prose roams from an intimate relationship with a particular cove on the south coast, to meditations on his great-grandmother and a lesson on what goes into the mapping of hills themselves. Because a good walk in the hills is never just about the hills: you never know where it might lead.

I received a generous Powell's gift card for Christmas, and it took me forever to decide what I wanted to use it on. Been a fan of Tom Cox since I started following his My Sad Cat Twitter ages ago. Tod A is a musician (Cop Shoot Cop, Firewater) I love a lot. And, well, Raymond Chandler is Raymond Chandler. #bookhaul

A big ol‘ hug-of-a-book, that‘ll have you wanting to climb a hill, go sea-swimming and/or put another log on the fire. Whilst listening to prog-folk.

I enjoy Tom Cox on Twitter, but wasn‘t sure if that would translate to longer-form. It does. He rambles all over the place (in all senses) but always with a sense of Wonder, sheer enthusiasm for people, places, and the natural world.

rockpools Avoid if you can‘t handle sweary cats/Dads/authors. And you might want to skip the section on the loss of 2 of his cats (end of last chapter) if you‘re feeling fragile.

#BBRC #CatsNap (though his rarely do) and (a bit of a stretch, but...) #Booked2019 #SocialMediaFocus because it‘s a crowdfunded book through Unbound, and he dicusses the impact of his cat‘s SM fame (Newsflash: people are weird!)

My ACTUAL #weeklyforecast is to carry on reading Ring the Hill. (Look at those #endpapers 😍... )

The fact that it‘s December has just hit as well, so I really want to finish all the books I‘m currently reading before the end of the month and maybe do something a little Christmassy - however, that‘s all a bit more flying pigs than actual forecast, so I‘ll stick with the one book for this week!

squirrelbrain 🤣🤣🤣 at the flying pigs! 🐷 4y

This week‘s #bookreport... ummm... it‘s very seafoamy here today 🌊...

My summer-long reading slump is a bit back 😕

Still reading‘Ring the Hill‘ - total comfort reading, much of it set round here (so sea pics are almost relevant!) . Love it 🏚🦔🐖😸🏊🏼‍♂️

Also read a bunch of kids books for #BBRC 👍

Last week was more productive- 1 ARC finished, 1 bailed + caught up with 2 #readaroundtheworld books: fave was The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.

Palimpsest Looks beautiful to me ☺️ 4y

#TIL #TodayILearned that I really need to explore Somerset. It‘s the next county along, and tends to be somewhere you need to get through to reach the rest of the country, not helped by the relatively rubbish public transport in these parts. But Tom‘s selling it - I love ‘cargo pants towns‘ like Shepton Mallet! It also has a haunted prison and lots of 👻.

rockpools @Magslhalliday If Tom and his cats are on Twitter, all‘s right with the world - was v surprised to see this on the shelf with no reservations! I was going to ask - are you going to any of the ExeLitFest things? I‘ve just booked for a couple of talks on the Saturday. 4y
Magslhalliday @RachelO I was booked for all the Sherlockian stuff on the Friday but it‘s been cancelled. Saturday crime panel looks great but I‘ve family commitments. ;( 4y
