My Dark Vanessa \ Mi Sombría Vanessa (Spanish Edition)
My Dark Vanessa \ Mi Sombría Vanessa (Spanish Edition) | Kate Elizabeth Russell

This book is powerful, evocative, heartbreaking, and upsetting. Beautifully written, and that makes it harder to bear. A young girl is taken advantage of in every way by someone who should protect her and her story of strength and resilience in unforgettable. I see why so many people rave about this one, but it is a really tough read. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

I chose this photo because this girl is how I imagine Vanessa—even her demeanor. A friend lent me this book and it was hard to get through. So often, we don‘t see abuse for what it really is in the beginning, even though parts of us are screaming on the inside: RUN. This book was full of gross moments and a lot of manipulation but worth the patience. If you want to read more about sexual abuse and the me too movement, I strongly encourage you

JenniferEgnor to read Tarana Burke‘s Unbound. The me too movement was Black led and later hijacked by white feminism. Start there first! 2y

I realize this book is chalk full of triggers, but it has equal potential to be therapeutic to help a reader understand they are not alone in their world of confused feelings. …I went to HS in an era where students did not tell on authority figures. When I was a sophomore a teacher would say wildly inappropriate things to me. I was very fortunate to have supportive, protective friends so this was not my story. ↓

marleed My hometown town of Butte, Montana is referenced in this book. Maybe you have to grow up there to appreciate it, but I swear it‘s a much better place than this book paints it out to be! 3y

Bailedbailed

A few of my friends loved this, but I'm bailing early. I feel icky listening to erotically described sexual experiences between a 14 year old and her teacher. 🤷â€â™€ï¸ I'm sure there is more substance to it than that, but I figure that if I'm uncomfortable this early in, I should just stop now. Life's too short, and there are too many other books in my TBR.

AlisBookNookCorner I finished it, but found it incredibly uncomfortable. There were so many extremely detailed encounters throughout the whole book. Not something I would ever recommend to others. Not sure how it got such raving reviews. 3y

Loved this book, despite how dark and disturbing it was. I think this would be an epic book club read as there would be so much to discuss!

Trying to decide if I can categorize My Dark Vanessa into the Popsugar 21 Reading Challenge prompt of "dark academia" or not. Thoughts?

jessjess I can definitely use it in the "has a black and white cover" prompt so I'll probably but it there, but it did get me thinking: what exactly would we call "Dark Academia"? 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I checked the listopia linked in the Goodreads group and it shows up as 13 th on the list so I think it's good! 3y
jessjess @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick see I thought maybe, but wasn't sure. Thank you for checking! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick My pleasure! I had it open on my phone since I'm gathering ideas for myself. 3y

THIS BOOK BROKE MY HEART.

I have been where Vanessa is, having to face years of minimizing what happened to you, and the reality of what it is to say, yes, it really did happen, I was raped, and I survived in the way I knew how. So while I do recommend this as a good (brutal, dark) pick I also think it's a little awful to read.

MySharonaK I completely agree . *hug* â¤ï¸ 3y

Rick gave me his tablet to read and today there's no work for me so I am able to start it out the way I love best! Reading and enjoying the sound of my candle and some green tea in a new rooster teacup my SIL Pearl gave me for Christmas 🥰

TW: rape, pedophilia, suicide

A difficult, but necessary read on the long-term psychological damage and emotional trauma left on Vanessa, a victim of grooming and rape by her teacher. The relationship becomes an obsession as she struggles with feelings of true love and repulsion. We see it‘s consequences leak out into every area of her life, as the reader reads, helpless and uncomfortable. It‘s dark, twisted, and chilling.

2000. Bright, ambitious, and yearning for adulthood, fifteen-year-old Vanessa Wye becomes entangled in an affair with Jacob Strane, her magnetic and guileful forty-two-year-old English teacher.
2017. Amid the rising wave of allegations against powerful men, a reckoning is coming due. Strane has been accused of sexual abuse by a former student. 😳Not really liking where this is going.😞

BehindthePages I'm not sure I could handle this one. 4y

This is a disturbing read of a teenager who has an affair with her teacher and the aftermath of what happens to her. This read can be compared to My Little Life in how disturbing the subject matter is. Both victims reject the idea that they were not at fault for what happened to them and the abusers both blame the victims for their behavior. The only difference is the teacher in this read seems to believe that he was doing nothing really wrong.

Next on the list is My Dark Vanessa, halfway through and will post a review when it‘s finished. Much more dark than I initially thought it would be. #pageturner

Because even if I sometimes use the word abuse to describe certain things that were done to me, in someone else‘s mouth the word turns ugly and absolute. It swallows up everything that happened.
