Love these chapter headings...
This fantasy spy thriller #audiobook is a heady ride across the alternate Europe landscape of Pullman‘s imagination, and, in fact, involves the search for Lyra‘s lost imagination. She‘s 20 in this 2nd part of a trilogy & I like seeing the development of her character, hard as it is to also see how she & her daemon have fallen out over the way Lyra has been influenced by philosophies she encountered in books. Cliffhanger ending warning.
Lyra bent over the open vessel and found the concentrated fragrance of every rose that had ever bloomed: a sweetness and power so profound that it moved beyond sweetness altogether and out of the other side of its own complexity into a realm of clear and simple purity and beauty. It was the smell of sunlight itself.
I have mixed feelings. I love Pullman‘s writing, and I‘m confident Book 3 will satisfy all the questions this one leaves hanging. But this book is sad! Lyra and Pan can‘t seem to connect the way they used to, and their strife leads to separate journeys. Their world is also going through political and religious turmoil, and everything is bleak.
You‘ve got a lot to finish in book 3 Mr. Pullman. Please don‘t let me down!
TW in spoiler below!
It‘s a chilly morning, so we‘re all extra snuggled in with fuzzy blankets.
I feel like it‘s taking forever to read this one! I think it‘s mostly just that life is distracting me right now. At least I get a little reading time before obligations call me in a couple hours.

It was with no insignificant trepidation that I ventured forth to meet the adult Lyra. Pullman's writing, as previously, as always, is flawless, having that ineffable quality that draws you in & sweeps you away - his storytelling is just sublime. And it was an utterly delight to be back in that world, with those characters...even if seeing Lyra drinking in a pub with an ex she'd slept with was a little discombobulating! I‘m enjoying this #chunkster, and the little illustrations at each chapter heading are sweet. Reading this has convinced me to add a reread of His Dark Materials to my TBR for early next year.
I realized yesterday I‘m reading two books at the moment with “Secret” in the title: this and The Secret Wisdom of the Earth. Interesting 🧐 book coincidence.
Here we go then book two, trilogy two, Pan‘s been running around Oxford
I'm torn about how to rate this numerically. I gave the first in the series a 3+. For much of this, second, installment, I might have rated the same. Ultimately, however, I'd rate it a 2+ or 3- because of graphic description of extreme violence, including a sexual assault. This is supposed to be entertainment! Sexual assault is not entertaining. Full stop.
This is probably the book I am most excited to have signed. His Dark Materials is together with the Earthsea novels my favourite children's books. So perfect.
Only about 60 pages in, but it is so nice to spend some time with Lyra again!
Blissful break with my favourite tasty protein bar which really does have a cake vibe 🍰
Loving this book after having a muted response to La Belle Sauvage (which I may now be able to forgive what I felt in a first and isolated reading was an unacceptable prioritisation of art over morality in the treatment of Alice).
If only it wasn't about to be a new season and event on Fortnite.... My boys are so loud and excited 😱😱
New books arrived! With new bookmark designs ❤
This beauty was in my mailbox this morning. 😍.
In other news, I had a wonderful time having dinner and hanging out with @Mitch and her sweet husband last night! I‘m not sure why we didn‘t take any pictures... Can‘t wait to see you again next week my friend!
I‘m so thankful to @Litsy for bringing so many wonderful book friends into my life. ❤️❤️❤️
I've been lurking but not posting recently. Been super busy settling my son into a supported secondary school place.. Oh and turning 50!! 😱😱I held out a week but ended up ordering both these two earlier today. Excited to start it tonight but I have literally no luck buying Pullman books on Amazon... This time it came out of rubbish half open packaging with multiple page fold damage 😭😭😭 grrrrr
I thought the first book in this new trilogy was *fine,* but this one was MUCH more engaging. Part of it is that Lyra has agency in this one (and a very interesting problem), part of it is that it is engaging with interesting issues and themes, and advancing a thesis in the way La Belle Sauvage didn't, and maybe couldn't. In any case, check this one out if you're into His Dark Materials, or if you're not.
Just amazing and brilliant and wonderful. Such great story telling. A bit of a sad vibe to it too, won‘t say anymore on that but happy to discuss with those that have finished! Book hangover time.
#lunchtimeread - wish I could stay at home and just read this ☹️ it‘s awesome so far.
Done! Love! Will have to read again and connect the dots. Now where's it going to go in the meantime!
Aaaaand finally.....last one....The Secret Commonwealth. I got this yesterday as a birthday present from my in-laws (my birthday was last week) and I can‘t wait to delve in! October‘s pretty seen up with books I‘m reading so it‘ll be November I think.
The gorgeous signed special edition ❤️❤️ finally managed to pick up my copy today!
Yes! My schedule is clear and I can now begin this one. Also I'm soooo excited about the upcoming adaptation starring the godlike Lin-Manuel Miranda (picture stolen shamelessly from his Twitter). As much as I'm looking forward to his Lee I am as ever obsessed by Marisa Coulter - such a layered & complex character. Meep!
Lyra is reading a book that Pan doesn't like at all and he calls her a stupid cow. 😱
I came home from work tonight to find Philip Pullman's new gem of a book waiting for me! 😍 Don't you just love coming home to book mail? Best feeling ever! 💕📚 This book takes place about 10 years after the events in The Amber Spyglass and I'm excited to see what Lyra and Pan have been up to. I may reread the other books again though first, before starting this one. Also this book is huge, which is a great surprise! Almost 650 pages! #bookmail
Meep! It's out! It arrived on my Kindle at 3 minutes past midnight and it was a huge effort not to drive straight in. Mainly because it was 3 minutes past midnight on a school night but also because I'd totally misjudged my reading schedule and I'm currently in the middle of a book I don't really want to abandon. So I'll have to wait a little while longer ... but just having it waiting is still exciting enough!
It's getting closer! So excited to read this - i have it pre-ordered on Kindle so it should download just after midnight of release day. The original trilogy was a huge part of my life for a long time & I cannot wait to see what comes next.
