Ashley has just moved into a new home where she and her mother rent the top floor from a crotchety old lady. Ashley ends up finding an antique, worn doll buried in the backyard, and comes to discover its owner, a young girl dying of tuberculosis, after a ghost cat named #snowball leads her through a hedge into the past. Sounds like a wild ride, yes? I was thrilled to rediscover this one after falling in love with it as a child. #winterwonderland

AlaMich Hmmm...that doll, though...a little creepy. 😱 5y

Reggie Lol, my grandma used to collect dolls like this one and we hated staying in the room where she kept them. You couldn‘t sleep comfortably. 5y

Please tell me you all remember this book.

This book had all the elements that I loved as a child—crumbling Victorian house that has since burned down, a ghost, a cemetery, a buried doll. Just like Hahn‘s other book I read this month, this one absolutely lived up to my memory. I absolutely loved it. Now I need to buy a copy so my kids can (hopefully) love it too.

GypsyKat I don‘t remember this, but it looks fun! 5y

This was an enjoyable and quick read. Perfect for a "back to basics" reading with a great storyline. A great read for older elementary and middle school readers. Not to mention anyone looking for a great story with a bit of mystery and a bit of ghostliness.

#gardentitle #aprilbookshowers I read The Doll in the Garden back in elementary school. This is the cover art that adorned my school library's copy. I've always enjoyed Mary Downing Hahn's books, and I'm glad she's still writing.

JacintaMCarter I read all of her books in elementary school! 7y
Chelsibno @JacintaMCarter I read a lot of her books in elementary school, too! Did you hear that Took is nominated for the William Allen White Award? I'm so excited! It's been years since the last time one of her books was nominated! 7y

When Ashley discovers a turn-of-the-century doll it is just the first of several puzzling events that lead her through the hedge and into a twilight past where she meets Louise, an ailing child whose beloved doll has mysteriously disappeared.

Kept me on the edge of my seat. It was creepy, but sometimes hard to follow, but if you can keep up with the sudden turns it takes, you'll love it!

quirkyreader I love her writing and recommend it to younger folk who are done with 8y
quirkyreader Darn stupid iPad keys, finished reading the Harry Potter and Twilight series. 8y
