Even as a young girl, Jill was a favorite of the magical, mysterious Wildfolk, who appeared to her from their invisible realm. Little did she know her extraordinary friends represented but a glimpse of a forgotten past and a fateful future. Four hundred years-and many lifetimes-ago, one selfish young lord caused the death of two innocent lovers. Then and there he vowed never to rest until he'd rightened that wrong-and laid the foundation for the lives of Jill and all those whom she would hold dear: her father, the mercenary soldier Cullyn; the exiled berserker Rhodry Maelwaedd; and the ancient and powerful herbman Nevyn, all bound in a struggle against darkness. . . and a quest to fulfill the destinies determined centuries ago. Here in this newly revised edition comes the incredible novel that began one of the best-loved fantasy seers in recent years--a tale of bold adventure and timeless love, perilous battle and pure magic. For long-standing fans of Deverry and those who have yet to experience this exciting series, Daggerspell is a rare and special treat. From the Paperback edition.

#WyrdAndWonder day 7: say what? Today we‘re talking books featuring fictional languages so I‘m singing the praises of the epic Deverry saga with its languages derived from Celtic and Ancient Greek (and because they‘re all time favourites of mine ❤️)

I really enjoyed this debut novel from one of fantasy‘s best loved and prolific authors. A great story and plenty of backstory and vivid worldbuilding.

BookwormM Love this series was upset when they changed the cover designs so my later books don‘t match 2y

Deverry Cycle by Katharine Kerr

A Celtic fantasy series. As of Feb 2020, 16 books have been published. I only have 4, which make up Act I: Deverry. These books I love to savor, so I read them only when I have plenty of time to devote to them.

But I am annoyed the UK versions of books 3 & 4 were titled Dawnspell & Dragonspell, which I think works much better than the U.S titles.

🎉🎈🎁🎂 Birthday Book Haul Post #3 😀💕📚

I received some gift cards and book money from friends and coworkers for my birthday last week...and these are the books I purchased with those! 😀 The right pile is all Deverry books, as it's a fantasy series I've always been interested in! 💕📚 #bookhaul

I still love this book. It reads very differently now and I respond to different elements (Cullyn redeeming mistakes in former lives; Jill recognising Nevyn; Lovyan's politics) - but I think I'll always love this book.

The best series-openers leave the reader excited about what‘s to come, and this pseudo-Celtic reincarnation story delivers. I like the characters in their current incarnations, I‘m eager to see what new facets of their personalities emerge as Kerr continues to explore their past lives, and I want to see how everything plays out in the present.

There ARE some dull patches, but this is mostly good stuff. TW for incest.

Okay, friends; I‘m determined to finally finish DAGGERSPELL today. (Have I mentioned how much I hate reading slowly? My current pace is killing me.) I‘ve just read the big battle, which tbh was another borderline dull patch for me, and I‘m hoping the book ends strong.

Rain‘s back. We‘re being lazy.

I wanted to do #24b4monday this weekend, but I‘ve had a lot less reading time than I expected and I‘m only at 9:30 after the chunk I just did. Oh well. It was a spur of the moment thing anyways. #caseyplusbooks

mcipher I‘m only at 3 hours according to my stopwatch. I think it‘s wrong but whatever. I only decided to join yesterday morning and then had a busy-ish day doing non-book stuff. 5y

I‘ve done all the stuff I‘ve gotta do. Now I get to read my book and drink my new-to-me beer out of my new-to-me Jets glass.

I‘m about halfway through DAGGERSPELL and I‘m loving it. Fingers crossed it keeps up; I bought the next three today and I do NOT want a repeat of the Great Raymond E. Feist Debacle. (I had SO MANY Riftwar books stocked up, and I got SO BORED before I‘d even finished book one.)

Last night I got so bored with DAGGERSPELL I put it down and figured I probably wouldn‘t pick it back up. This afternoon I decided to give it twenty more pages, and hey! I found my way back into it!

I‘m now on page 150, and I‘m sorry the Book Market didn‘t have the next couple volumes. I think I‘m gonna want to read on when this one‘s done.

Deverry fans, I need your help. I read the first chunk of DAGGERSPELL earlier. I liked it, but I‘m not hooked yet.

Now I‘m into the second part, where all the characters are in their first incarnation, and I‘m SO. BORED.

Does the book turn around, or is the 643 segment a good litmus test for what‘s ahead of me?

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Hey, friend! Life has left me little time to Litsy lately (but apparently I still have plenty of time for alliteration) but I saw this and thought of you. Thor is coming to Serial Box with chapters written by Yoon Ha Lee and Jay of Jay & Miles! https://www.tor.com/2019/09/26/thor-gets-to-meet-some-of-lokis-old-pirate-flames... 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I also wanted to say the moment when Jay & Miles were interviewing Kurt “Oh my gosh read Astro City if you haven‘t yet” Busiek and they all three started reciting the prophetic poems from The Dark is Rising was some transcendent geekery. 5y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I‘m very excited about this! I love Serial Box. Also, the Dark Is Rising poem recitation was a major geeky moment for me because I expended GREAT EFFORT to memorize it when I was 10. 5y

I can‘t seem to get warm today. Boooo. Tea helps a bit.

Gonna see if I can sink into DAGGERSPELL tonight. It‘s been on La TBR since October 2007, which I only know because I bought it during a period where I pencilled the purchase date inside each new book‘s front cover. Someone on LibraryThing recced the Deverry series to me when I was in Robin Hobb withdrawal and wanted something bingeable, stat—which is why I sat on it for 12 years.

I finished this a couple weeks ago. Bought it today... not the usual order for me lol. Actually I had wanted to read this for a long time - an acclaimed fantasy that I hadn't read before - and I thought I owned it. Turns out I had Darkspell (book 2), oops. So I read this one from the library, and really liked it. Always a good sign when I want my own copy of one I read from the library.

Excellent Celtic high-fantasy with a fun and intricate reincarnation plot in which the characters have to work out their debts and wrongdoings to one another. I found myself deeply caring for a lot of the characters who often had complex flaws and ambiguous morality. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
