Night Walks
Night Walks | Charles Dickens
9 posts | 5 read | 16 to read
Charles Dickens describes in Night Walks his time as an insomniac, when he decided to cure himself by walking through London in the small hours, and discovered homelessness, drunkenness and vice on the streets. This collection of essays shows Dickens as one of the greatest visionaries of the city in all its variety and cruelty. GREAT IDEAS. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.

Great little book contains about ten descriptions of various walks around London.

Ending #nfn2020 with a classic - enjoying my city through Dickens eyes ( and feet!) whilst under blankets on the sofa - bittersweet.

Soubhiville Nice! That‘s a good looking book! 3y
Mitch @Soubhiville Its a very slim book - part of the Penguin Great Ideas set - but in my opinion the perfect size! 3y
zezeki I have this book, but I have yet to read it. Curious to see how you'll like it. ☺️ 3y
Mitch @zezeki I really enjoyed it - i love the idea of the ritual of night walking and i never tire of Dickens wiring about London - he captures the city so well, i can recognise it even now! 3y

Smashing the walking this week nearly 7 miles today. We did a night walk and ended at the pub so a picture of this crazy one instead of the scenery 🤣

I would really like to get my hands on this one! There's just something about walking in the dark, and something about Dickens 😍

This wasn't really for me. My eyes kept sliding over the words without really reading and comprehending them. I read two essays and the beginning of a third, and I can only give the vaguest description of what I have read..

Maybe, I will try it again another day.

As the English say- "needs must". But even though I have to get my hair done and temporarily interrupt my @24in48 readathon, I am trying to cram little stolen moments to continue with Dicken's Night Walks.

Matcha apple and banana vegan smoothie plus book #2 for @24in48 readathon! Only 2 1/2 hours in, but loving the joy of trying to read for 24 hours in a 48 hour period!

Every morning I spend with a book and a cup of coffee is a #puremorning for me. Hopefully I will get a couple of those this weekend for the #24in48 readathon. I have to go to a birthday on Saturday, and I am not sure I will be able to read for 24 hours, so my #tbr consists of relatively short books. That way I still feel like I finish something 📚

Avanders What a pretty stack of books! I've just added 3 of them to my Amazon wishlist 😜 7y
Kalalalatja @Avanders how nice! Or bad, depending on how you look at it 😂 7y
Cinfhen Great photo! Have fun with your readathon and party! And I concur with your idea of #puremorning 7y

I started reading this slim tome after visiting the Dickens Museum in London. It's filled with short essays and a delight to read, especially if you are interested in Dickens as an early social justice pioneer.
