Mehso-so

I am left rattled by this novel. The plot twists were rather jarring. I felt my expectations being toyed with. There was a travel sequence in the middle that had language which delighted me, and some of the dialogue was really sharp. However, the plot did not resolve in a satisfying way for me. I‘m doing a read-along of all of Forster this year and I‘m looking forward to see how his writing developed. There is brilliance here, but in a small dose.

It didn't end like I thought it would. In spite of that ending, it was much funnier than I expected.

Enjoyed this much more than I expected to.

There are no likeable characters, no nationality comes of well and yet it was still compulsive reading if only to see just how awful these people could be. Very!

BarbaraBB I remember I was pleasantly surprised too! 3y

This is the real town that Monteriano, the location for much of the book, was based on. The atmosphere pervades and while Forster is getting his digs in on English society, he skewers the Italians equally. A tragic story, but with moments of comedy, pathos, and philosophy. Highly recommended!

Forster puts some of his most philosophical comments into Caroline Abbott‘s mouth.

In some ways Forster was ahead of his time.

Lunch time read, and next month‘s book club pick. I enjoy Forster, and this one is no exception so far. (My eBook has no cover, so I found this online.)

This is my first time to read a book by EM Forster. Bought at Daunt Books, Marleybone, London. 2018.

This is the story about the English Lilia, who disgraces her former family-in-law by marrying a young Italian without any standing. I read it as a satire, making fun of the English who feel so superior to the Italians and always 'dare to judge but not to rebel'. Because when they realize they're not always right, they don't act on in. #1001books

My handmade, signed Carnevale mask and my favorite of all the photos I took in Venice. Where Angels Fear to Tread take place, in Venice and the characters were #masks during Carnevale... And more metaphorical ones throughout the novel.

RealLifeReading Ooh I remember coveting beautiful masks in Venice! 7y
Ubookquitous @RealLifeReading yes, we searched throughout Venice to find someone who made the traditional masks for the big events during Carnevale, not the 90% sold in the typical tourist shops. Far more expensive, but worth it. Someday I want to be in Venice for Carnevale and wear it! 7y
