Looking for Alibrandi
Looking for Alibrandi | Melina Marchetta
Josephine Alibrandi is 17 and in her final year of school. Dealing with her mum, the ways of her Nonna and preparing for exams is daunting enough, then real life starts to get in the way of her carefully-made plans. She has to deal with her father being in her life for the first time, falling in love and uncovering her family's secret background. And yet despite all the turmoil, this is the year Josie discovers that emancipation doesn't necessarily mean escaping from your past, and that sometimes, you need to face up to who you are in order to set yourself free.Co-founded by Jane and Glenn McGrath, the McGrath Foundation raises money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia and to increase breast awareness in young women. The McGrath Foundation believes 150 of these specially trained nurses are needed to ensure that every family experiencing breast cancer has access to a breast care nurse, no matter where they live or their financial situation. McGrath Breast Care Nurses offer a unique service to families who can self-refer to this free support.By purchasing this special edition you are helping the McGrath Foundation realise their goal. 'Living is the challenge, Josie. Not dying. Dying is so easy. Sometimes it only takes ten seconds to die. But living? That can take you eighty years and you do something in that time, whether it's giving birth to a baby or being a housewife or a barrister or a soldier. You've accomplished something.'

This is one of my favourite books ❤ Do I need more copies? Absolutely 😝

Reread this gem 23 years after my first reading in year 9. Apart from a few aged references to Telecom and shoulder pads, this story absolutely still translates and resonates. My view of Josie has changed with my age and experience, making this reading different but still enjoyable.

Day 18: #uglycover

Listen, I‘ve really enjoyed Melina Marchetta‘s books, but this 1992 cover is so distasteful 😂🤢

Either of my most recent review posts could have doubled for this prompt, but I'm going with this story about a teenage girl discovering her father.

Today‘s book haul!! 📚
The Princeton Public Library had its annual sale, and I controlled myself by setting a limit of 3 books and managing to walk out with 4 ☺️ That‘s what I call self-control! 😂💖
1. “Looking for Alibrandi” by Melina Marchetta
2. “Good in Bed” by Jennifer Weiner
3. “Girl Online” by Zoe Sugg
4. “Once & Future” (# 1) by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy

Local Girl Anna Daniels who is well known in national radio and TV circles released her debut novel, which is set in our town of Rockhampton. I confess I have not read it yet. She cites her all time favorite book as Looking For Alibrandi. @ErinSueG @WhiskeyMistress

Great YA read. An Australian Catholic schoolgirl travels the road to adulthood in Sydney while dealing with her Italian heritage, boys, exams, and a newly found father. Captures all the tumult of youth amidst Australia‘s conversation about multiculturalism in the early 90s.

Jaya @Jokila I think you‘re a YA reader so you might like this one. 6y

I'm beginning to realise that things don't turn out the way you want them to.
And sometimes, when they don't, they can turn out just a little bit better.

#BookMail today contained the Viking/Penguin Australian Children‘s Classics edition of the tagged book. I love these so much, especially Playing Beattie Bow, the colour is gorgeous! I need to track down Blueback by Tim Winton, The Power Of One by Bryce Courtenay, A Fortunate Life by A.B.Facey, I Can Jump Puddles by Alan Marshall & Taronga by Victor Kelcher in this edition. If anyone knows where I can find them, I‘ll be eternally grateful.🙏

The film version of Looking for Alibrandi celebrates its 17-year anniversary today! 😍 BuzzFeed AU is live-tweeting a rewatch of this film at 12.30pm. Come and join! I'm betting the motorbike ride across Anzac Bridge will feel just as amazing today.

I mentioned to the hubby that I've never had a Golden Gaytime. So this is what he bought me tonight. Paired with an equally iconic Australian book. 😍

Joanne1 Two great classics!! 7y
BookThingo @Joanne1 Absolutely! I don't think the box of Golden Gaytimes in the freezer will last the weekend, tbh. 7y

#octphotochallenge Day 2 - Literary best friend. Growing up Josephine Alabrandi was the closest thing I got to a literary best friend (and Ellie from tomorrow when the war began) An Australian teenager with sass that seemed to understand a lot of what I went through as well, it's why Marchetta remains one of my favourite authors to this day.

lynneamch Sorry Laura. I mistakenly tagged you instead of Lara in The Bell Jar read-along comments today. 6y
