The Honeymoon | Dinitia Smith

Based on the life of George Eliot, famed author of Middlemarch, this captivating account of Eliots passions and tribulations explores the nature of love in its many guises Dinitia Smiths spellbinding novel recounts George Eliots honeymoon in Venice in June 1880 following her marriage to a handsome young man twenty years her junior. When she agreed to marry John Walter Cross, Eliot was recovering from the death of George Henry Lewes, her beloved companion of twenty-six years. Eliot was bereft: left at the age of sixty to contemplate profound questions about her physical decline, her fading appeal, and the prospect of loneliness. In her youth, Mary Ann Evanswho would later be known as George Eliotwas a country girl, considered too plain to marry, so she educated herself in order to secure a livelihood. In an era when female novelists were objects of wonder, she became the most famous writer of her daywith a male nom de plume. The Honeymoon explores different kinds of love, and of the possibilities of redemption and happiness even in an imperfect union. Smith integrates historical truth with her own rich rendition of Eliots inner voice, crafting a page-turner that is as intelligent as it is gripping.

I‘ve been so MIA from Litsy and also haven‘t had much time to read, but that‘s because we are on our honeymoon! We finished the first part of our adventure with hiking, cliff jumping and abseiling down waterfalls in Cape Town. Now, off to the Winelands for wine tasting! Everything is so beautiful here. But I sure am so looking forward to coming home to Litsy mail. I‘ve been picking up small things for the #LitsyLove crew and can‘t wait to share!♥️

Hello, my beautiful Littens! I am looking for audiobook suggestions. I'm leaving on my honeymoon in a few days and need a new book to listen to. I'm almost finished with Gone Girl and loved the narration! I'm open for anything you've loved! Thanks, Friends!

Redy2trvl I've never done an audiobook, so I'm so interested in seeing everyone's suggestions. 7y
Redy2trvl Btw, honeymoon 💕💕💕💕... so exciting! 7y
cathysaid I just finished We Are Not Ourselves narrated by Mare Winningham and it was quite engaging. But not a light or happy read. I've also enjoyed the narration for The Nightingale. Finally, I've loved the Jeffrey Archer series, the Clifton Chronicles, on audiobook. There are 6, maybe 7, in the series and I love the British accent of the narrator (same one for all). The first book is Only Time Will Tell. Enjoy your honeymoon! 💕 7y
Bookladylinda I love The Clifton Chronicles on audio!!! 7y

Why would George Eliot, Marian Evan's pen name, at 60 marry a man 20 years her junior shortly after the death of the man she loved for 26 years?

That is the question the author tries to answer in this novel pulling from biographies, letters, and other material.

Overall I really enjoyed it. I found the middle to feel less like fiction trying to fit all the books she was writing in and all the details. Four stars ****

Looking back at those hours, she wondered if God, or nature, or whoever it was, granted humans a kind of mercy at terrible times by dulling their minds with exhaustion and blunting their perceptions.

She marveled at the infinite variety of the English language, words in general, the rhythms of the English sentence, the sentences twisting and turning themselves in a symphonic complexity...

Words alone were abstractions, but when they were joined and linked, they could thrill and take possession of the soul. Words were the weapons and playthings of the mind.

Smith's book is a well researched and sensitively imagined fictional biography of Marian Evans' (aka George Eliot) life, from childhood to death. This is much more about her life and loves than her writing career But her life inspired her works! Engrossing!

It's Friday night and I'm almost done with The Honeymoon, but I'm a bit distracted by this sweet girl...and my family of course!
Apologies to those who already follow me on Facebook and Instagram, but she's a part of who I am and need to show my (new) peeps here!

SusanInTiburon She's marvelous! JRT? What's her name? 8y
KikiLovesBooks Penny! And a mutt/-half JRT, half dachshund--that's what we were told. lol. She's about 10lbs. And thank you, she's adored! 8y

It's called "The Honeymoon," but it's actually Marian Evans--aka George Eliot--looking back upon her life while on her Venetian honeymoon to John Walker Cross, her husband who is 20 years younger than herself. It's fascinating and is inspiring me to try Middlemarch again this summer.
