Harlot's Ghost
Harlot's Ghost: A Novel | Norman Mailer
11 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
With unprecedented scope and consummate skill, Norman Mailer unfolds a rich and riveting epic of an American spy. Harry Hubbard is the son and godson of CIA legends. His journey to learn the secrets of his societyand his own pasttakes him through the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the momentous catastrophe of the Kennedy assassination. All the while, Hubbard is haunted by women who were loved by both his godfather and President Kennedy. Featuring a tapestry of unforgettable characters both real and imagined, Harlots Ghost is a panoramic achievement in the tradition of Tolstoy, Melville, and Balzac, a triumph of Mailers literary prowess. Praise for Harlots Ghost [Norman Mailer is] the right man to exalt the history of the CIA into something better than history.Anthony Burgess, The Washington Post Book World Elegantly written and filled with almost electric tension . . . When I returned from the world of Harlots Ghost to the present I wished to be enveloped again by Mailers imagination.Robert Wilson, USA Today Immense, fascinating, and in large part brilliant.Salman Rushdie, The Independent on Sunday A towering creation . . . a fiction as real and as possible as actual history. The New York Times Praise for Norman Mailer [Norman Mailer] loomed over American letters longer and larger than any other writer of his generation. The New York Times A writer of the greatest and most reckless talent. The New Yorker Mailer is indispensable, an American treasure. The Washington Post A devastatingly alive and original creative mind.Life Mailer is fierce, courageous, and reckless and nearly everything he writes has sections of headlong brilliance. The New York Review of Books The largest mind and imagination [in modern] American literature . . . Unlike just about every American writer since Henry James, Mailer has managed to grow and become richer in wisdom with each new book.Chicago Tribune Mailer is a master of his craft. His language carries you through the story like a leaf on a stream. The Cincinnati Post From the Trade Paperback edition.

#donthauntthisplace #TimbitTunes This book , Mailers longest at 1300 pages. Its subject, the CIA thru the eyes of Harry Hubbard in the era of the Cuban revolution, the Mafia in the 1960s,&the Kennedy assassination. So it mixes real & fictional characters.I remember liking it. It was supposed to have a sequel,Harlot‘s Grave ,but between time and other projects,it never got written.

arubabookwoman I've tried twice to read that, both times getting to about p. 400, but it never took. 5y
TheKidUpstairs Sounds interesting, but it's quite a #chunkster! 5y
Leftcoastzen @arubabookwoman I get it.It took me a lot of pages but it did hook me. 5y
Cinfhen I wish I didn‘t have #pagecountphobia because it sounds fascinating 🧡👻 5y

#BookishQuestions
1. Harlot's Ghost by Norman Mailer, 1300 pages, which ended with, To be continued!
2. Smaller straight to the point books but I do seem to end up reading a lot of big books with lots of detail.
3. With lots of milk!
4. Adagio's Earl Grey Moonlight, so good.
5. At the kitchen table.
6. Nancy Drew and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were my first 'big kid' books that got me hooked for life.

Took me more than 2 years... Monster book at 1400 pg but it was that book I'd put down, read a chunk, go months before picking it up. Not a Mailer fan, and I had my usual issues, but the stories of Hubbard's past were interesting. At a certain point, I wavered between bailing and finishing it, hoping it would get better. The last words left me tossing the weighty tome across the room. So not worth it for me in the end. @Liberty

It's the end of that booktastic sale that I've been running all weekend. I keep making little piles of books to take home. This is today's, including a copy of The Prince of Tides because someone mentioned it the other day and I realized I can't find my copy. (When my husband divorces me for hoarding, I can just make a shelter out of the books I've collected, right??)

GuiltyFeat Harlot's Ghost is a monster. I loved it 7y
RiotMom @GuiltyFeat it's a door stopper for sure! It looked interesting, though! 7y

Completed. Time to decompress with "Stranger Things."

Curley_Bender I read Mailer's "The Executioner's Song" earlier this year. It has certainly stayed with me. I'll have to give this one a try...just as soon as I finish "Stranger Things"! 8y
MMenefee @Curley_Bender I read The Executioner's Song many, many moons ago and it has stayed with me after all this time. Unfortunately, Harlot's Ghost hasn't even remained after a couple of days. 8y

300 pages in and it's highly entertaining. I haven't even made it to the really good spy bits. Hoping to reach the half way point tonight before sleep arrives.

Pickpick

Wonderful odyssey of a family in 50's and 60's--suspenseful--political historical fiction. Long read.
