The Venus Trap
The Venus Trap | Louise Voss

Jo Atkins' sixteenth year was disastrous: she lost her dad, was assaulted by a stranger, and then had her heart broken. For the last twenty-five years, she's believed that nothing could ever be as bad again. She was wrong. Now, still smarting from her recent divorce, pretty, self-effacing Jo finally gathers the courage to enter the dating scene. She meets Claudio, whom she vaguely remembers from her youth, but after a few dates decides he's creepy and politely tells him 'thanks but no thanks'. But Claudio has no intention of letting her go. Instead of never seeing him again, Jo wakes up sick and terrified, handcuffed to her own bed. She is given a week to prove her love for Claudio--or he will kill her. Claudio, it turns out, is a man with nothing left to lose. The Venus Trap tackles the emotional impact of divorce, the perils of modern dating and the age-old powers of lust and obsession.

This book started off really well, but feel it lost some of its tension as we learnt more about Jo‘s back story rather the kidnapping. Interesting premise though being kidnapped and held in your own house by a former boyfriend. Overall though I did enjoy this as picked the tension back up as the book progressed. I look forward to reading more by Louise Voss.

Just starting The Venus Trap by Louise Voss, a psychological thriller, and a very interesting start with Jo having awoken handcuffed to a bed and she can‘t remember what happened that led to this! I loved the two books in the D I Patrick Lennon series that she wrote with Mark Edwards, so looking forward to this book. Do wish they‘d write another book in the Patrick Lennon series.

Sometimes I read books and I hope the main character dies; this was one of them. I never wanted to stop reading which is why I give this one a pick, but the main character is horrible. Never accept suspicious drinks!! 😂

Mariposa_Bookworm You too? I thought I was the only one. Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins have a knack for writing horrible people. 7y
Reggie When I was going to college, my grandma told me,"Mijo, if you go to a party, always get your own drinks. I saw a movie where this girl was given a drink and she died." Lol my brother got, "Use condoms because I don't want to be a great grandmother" and I got get your own drinks. Lol 7y
heyitsMacall @Reggie hahaha! There is so much advice out there 😂 7y
heyitsMacall @Mariposa_Bookworm it must be personal because I feel like I hate characters other people like hahaha 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm @Reggie Abuela was very smart. I have a friend from Nicaragua who starts all of our conversations with "Mija, let me tell you..." I love it!!! 7y

I thought this passage was haunting. The main character is not the brightest but I guess that's what makes the plot realistic.

Go on a date with a guy you have known since you were kids and wake up chained to a bed? Yeah I'm sure there were signs when he was younger that you obviously missed
