Eye candy, with little substance. The majority of volume 1 was filled with a convoluted plot with abrupt scene changes that often left me flipping back to make sure I didn‘t accidentally skip a page.

Beautiful illustrations though.

Addison_Reads I felt the same way about this one. 3w

Urban fantasy #graphicnovel with a spooky/noir vibe, set in Los Angeles. The storyline is easy to follow & somewhat predictable. The central issues of addiction & family relationships are believably portrayed. The art by Jen Bartel (& colorist Triona Farrell) is outstanding: the jewel tones, the fabulous outfits and magical creatures. And for #catsofLitsy fans, there‘s a delightful cat character named Sharpie. #comics

My favourite character in this series is Sharpie, because he speaks only in lies and I still miss Lying Cat from Saga.

I'm trying to get out of my reading slump...

The vibrant color collection on any given page is dessert to the eye.
The plot was a bit predictable at some points, but overall it was entertaining.
I‘ll definitely be on the lookout for the next issue.

The art in this graphic novel is absolutely stunning. I was sucked into the storyline immediately. I can‘t wait for volume two now! The waiting game is the worst!

I ended up really liking this graphic novel - enough to reserve the second one when it comes, anyway. (If there is one). A young woman whose life doesn't make sense comes to realise that the magical world she suspected was there has been real all along. But there is a dark side, and family secrets, and more.

This is the rare graphic novel that snagged my attention almost entirely because of the art. Jen Bartel‘s artwork here is amazing, and I can‘t remember the last time a colorist earned my praise, but Triona Farrell‘s color scheme for this series really elevates it. The writing is okay for me. There‘s so much that isn‘t revealed within these six issues, and until the story sticks the landing in the later reveals, it won‘t have proven itself to me.

The artwork in this is phenomenal! As is the magic system. The storyline and characters needed a bit more work, but I am WAY too intrigued to not continue reading this series.
Nina has always known that she is different, but not crazy, like her family says. When her sister is kidnapped by a giant demon, Nina goes in search of the magic she knows is real in order to get her sister back.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bc of the artwork & magic

If you like fantasy comics (eps. urban fantasy) go ahead & add this beautifully colorful comic about the secret world of magic in LA to your to-read list. Loved the concept of magical gangs fighting over territory and spellcasting gems, not to mention the twists & family drama at the center of it all. And of course a cursed cat! Can't forget him. Very interested to see where this comic takes us!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This first collected volume (issues 1-6), introduces Nina, her family, and the cryptic events that lead to current day. I‘m not quite sure about this hidden world of magic and cabals and a great, beautiful beast, but the artwork is utterly stunning. Fantasy is not typically my thing, but it works for me in comic form. I‘ll be back for Volume 2 when the time comes.

I loved the art, and I thought the concept was cool, but I felt like the writing was really lacking.

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was just so damn beautiful visually. There‘s a twist that I won‘t spoil but it‘s a trope that I‘m not particularly fond of in my late 20s. I also didn‘t buy the chemistry between the main character and the guy. Definitely not enough to be listed with a genre of romance on the back cover. Do read though interesting story! #Blackbird #GraphicNovels

Let‘s get the obvious out of the way—this is a gorgeous comic. The cover(s) with its saturated, dynamic colors is fantastic (the variant cover gallery as well) as is the art (throughout). It‘s a great story—reminds me a bit of Neverwhere with its LA characters know & another, magic riddled LA many don‘t see—with complicated family dynamics, questions about who to trust, a strong, independent lead & lots of magic. A great comic. Recommended.

Quiet #NCBD today. Blackbird is on a lot of “Best of” lists so I‘m excited to dive into the trade which collects Issues 1-6. Wonder Woman #70 because look at it—I have to say even if all the pages inside were blank, and I knew that going in, I‘d still buy it because these variant covers are THE BEST! Finally, Excellence #1 which I‘ve seen reviewed as good to great so yeah, I‘m ready to take a look. Actually, truth time...I love all three covers.
