Well-written plot enhanced by the quality of Brian Selznick's art.
It is a voyage through time revealing the power of imagination. This book is also about finding out where you belong, finding your place in the world, finding a home.

This book came highly recommended by a friend and I will admit I‘m highly intrigued by the cover/concept alone.
Once again Brian Selznick has amazed me & my boys with a fabulous story based on a unique history. I love the pictures & text, with magic & history. This story covers some really tough topics, which my 6 and 8 year olds are not quite ready to get the full reality about but give a good baseline for empathy of the topics. They asked a lot of tough questions while I was reading, too. “That‘s what life is [...] miracles and sadness, side by side.”
This fantasy book is amazing. It was a quick read since a lot of it is illustrations. I love the way the book is set up and how Brian Selznick uses illustrations and story to convey a plot. The characters are amazingly deep and the intense events that are discussed are so important. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. I cried at the end it was so good!!
I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!! 10/10 would definitely have older children read this book. Maybe 5th graders!

Anyone who hasn‘t been tagged yet and wants to play, post your favorite book covers for a week, no explanations ☺️
Modern fantasy. This is a story I definitely need to keep reading. The first story hooks you in with the art and makes you want to keep reading until you‘ve made it to that final page. This story is perfect for older children and up.
The Marvels by Brian Selznick, 2015. This is a wonderful modern fantasy story as it binds together two stories, one of illustration and one of literature. The first story is almost a new tale on an introductory chapter and it tells the story in just as much detail with the beautiful cross hatched drawing and the second story brings you in with just the year printed in big bold numbers before the words even begin.
“Joseph‘s head was spinning, and a long tense silence settled across the room.”
I absolutely LOVE the golden rim along the pages of the book as well as the page covering illustrations. They are dark and grainy, which brings me back in time. Additionally I like how the pages fill the two pages at a time.
This story begins with a shipwreck leading Billy to london and discovering his family‘s past and history, especially regarding theatre. I think observing the illustrations first and then reading the text will help to spark the reader's imagination and creative process. I think this story would be an excellent modern fantasy to have in any classroom, it really lets children explore and understand patterns of illustration.
Not a quote but i love how detailed and incredible the pictures are and how they tell the story as well.
I love how the story intertwined and it‘s a deeper book than you would think. The illustrations are incredible.
The book is half illustrations, half writing and i love that because it adds so much depth to the story. It‘s super engaging and the language is great as well. The characters are really well developed too.
Another great book by Selznick, that made you think the entire time & is a “marvel”-ous story for you to enjoy 😊😊 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
#HeyJune Day 30: The art in this gorgeous book begins in 1766 aboard a ship named the Kraken, hence a lot of #Yesterday here. Fast forward to 1990, the text-narrative, introduce readers to Joseph who ran away from his boarding school to find his uncle in London. A totally beautiful must-read Selznick creation. Brian Selznick is a magician. I've never read books as gorgeous as his and each one has its own special qualities. I do have to say that this was my least favorite but by no means does that mean it's a bad book!!!! Joseph runs away from his boarding school to find his uncle, a theater family, a house stuck in time and quickly realizes "aut visum aut non". Rich in detail and heavy on the feels, this story doesn't disappoint! #kidlitAtoZ
I love how Selznick's books introduce so many other bits and pieces of history, art and now poetry! This is one of my favorite poems & it was such a pleasure to stumble on it! 💜
Well this was a strange one. The best I can say is the artwork was lovely. The first 400 pages of pencil sketches seemed to promise adventure and theatrical shenanigans.
The remainder of the book is a tad dull. The setting is the 1990s, although weirdly everyone still behaves like characters from Dickens. The most incongruous part being a horse drawn carriage taken to the theatre. Where do you even park it ?
Slightly disappointing.
Pretty stoked about this ARC I found on the bargain carts outside @strandbookstore
Maybe the play wasn't about miracles. No, maybe it was about the passage of time, and the need for patience, and the ability to forgive. Maybe Shakespeare was saying that even in a world where miracles can happen, there's still going to be pain, and loss, and regret. Because sometimes people die and you can't bring them back. That's what life is Joseph realized, miracles and sadness, side by side.
Brian Selznick, The Marvels
Mom and I are ready for KC LitFest! One of us got to chill in the passenger seat and one of us is a little tired from driving in city traffic. I'll let you figure out which. Pumped to see the authors tomorrow and get the tagged book signed!!!
Nobody makes you feel like a speed reader like Brian Selznick! 390 pages in 70ish minutes, managing to convey a multigenerational story about living up to family expectations with nothing more than illustrations. 😍
Loved the modern edge to this book.
"That's what life is Joseph realized, miracles and sadness, side by side."
#sail the start of this incredible illustrated novel begins on a ship called the Kraken. The gold work on the cover is beautiful 😍
If I get a moment today I'd love to finish The Marvels. My daughter loves There is a Tribe of Kids so we'll probably read that 11 times too 😂
Look at this beauty! Half illustration and half text...gilt edged...hardback loveliness 😍
The artwork in this book is just stunning. The picture part of the story just about killed me several times. I have just started the prose part of the story and I have a feeling this is going to be a quite unforgettable book.
Here is one of my favorite #signed books that I haven't shared before. This was at the ALA annual conference in San Francisco in June 2015. #ReadJanuary
I love Brian Selznick's ability to tell a story with pictures.
