"Es una de las novelas mas realistas, dramaticas y esclarecedoras del proceso revolucionario de 1910, la cual se emparenta por derecho propio con las otras narraciones escritas por testigos y protagonistas de la lucha armada."

An interesting read from the #Reading1001 list about how and why some joined the revolution, and how they in the end became that which they wished to overcome... but it was choppy for me, I‘m not sure if it was the writing or the translation, but I didn‘t feel as invested in these characters as I should have. #Reading1001

This story has a rough & tumble kind of energy. A group of men band together under the leadership of a charismatic figure. It's not long before an idealist joins the ranks and the men are persuaded to fight for the revolution. It's not long before those ideals prove moot when faced with the realities of war. These underdogs fight because they love to fight. Azuela paints a vivid picture. Book is short, but the language is meaty. Solid pick!

"The streets in Aguascalientes were so many refuse piles. Men in khaki moved to and fro like bees before their hive, overrunning the restaurants, the crapulous lunch houses, the parlous hotels, and the stands of the street vendors on which rotten pork lay alongside grimy cheese.
The smell of these viands whetted the appetites of Demetrio and his men."

"I hoped to find a meadow at the end of the road, I found a swamp. Facts are bitter; so are men. That bitterness eat your heart out; it is poison, dry rot. Enthusiasm, hope, ideals, happiness - - vain dreams, vain dreams..... When that's over, you have a choice. Either you turn bandit, like the rest, or the timeservers will swamp you...."

"In his imagination, he reviewed the features of last night's men. One, Pancracio, was pockmarked, blotchy, unshaven; his chin protruded, his forehead receded obliquely; his ears formed one solid piece with head and neck--a horrible man. The other, Manteca, was so much human refuse; his eyes were almost hidden, his look sullen; his wiry straight hair fell over his ears, forhead and neck; his scrofulous lips hung eternally agape."

I don't usually find many items in library books, but this small book has 3 items: a grocery list (written in the book), notes on the book, and a book recommendation that I have added to my (huge) tbr shelf. I am leaving the loose items right where I found them 🙂 @Liberty #stackedup

JanuarieTimewalker13 I think it's all cool except the writing in the book, that breaks my heart, and shows a lack of respect for the book, the library, and other patrons. 7y
DreesReads @JanuarieTimewalker13 this book is a 1996 printing but the library stamped it in 2004--it might be a donation they shelved. 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Ok, that makes me feel better. Thank you! (edited) 7y
SilversReviews That's pretty neat to find things in a book. Oh...I see they wrote a grocery list on the page. That isn't good. (edited) 7y
