The Rachel Papers
The Rachel Papers | Martin Amis
8 posts | 12 read | 12 to read
In his uproarious first novel Martin Amis, author of the bestselling London Fields, gave us one of the most noxiously believable -- and curiously touching -- adolescents ever to sniffle and lust his way through the pages of contemporary fiction. On the brink of twenty, Charles High-way preps desultorily for Oxford, cheerfully loathes his father, and meticulously plots the seduction of a girl named Rachel -- a girl who sorely tests the mettle of his cynicism when he finds himself falling in love with her. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Martin Amis passed away recently, and someone had given me a bunch of books a while back so this is my new public commute read.

I‘ve been a fan for years but never read one of his first books. Better than I expected. Wickedly funny.

Up next (and hiding from the puppy again ).

This current read for my IRL book club looks like it might be a bit “dirty”. 😆

AlaMich I guess he‘ll have to grow into being a good reading buddy. 😊 4y
saresmoore Ooh, suggestive! 4y
ValerieAndBooks 😮 !! The cover of my copy (still TBR) is very generic looking!! 4y

Martin Amis was only 24 years old when he wrote this book. (Look how swoony young he was!) Charles is kind of at loose ends waiting for Oxford to start. That's why he has time to amble around London and obsess about Rachel. This book is filled with snark, arrogance and sweetness. A nice blueprint for seeing where Martin went with his writing. #londoncalling #rockinmay

merelybookish Loved this book. I thought about London Fields for this post but no longer have my copy. 7y
CherylDeFranceschi @merelybookish It was my first choice, but had already been used a few times. I once had a kitty named Nicola Six. 😻 7y
Cinfhen Very swoon worthy indeed!!! 7y
KarenUK I love this book! And the movie was great too 💕 7y
batsy This is a good book! I was thinking about this for the prompt as well, glad to see it mentioned ☺️ 7y

Used bookstore haul of the day. The Rachel Papers is a #BlameItOnLitsy ... more specifically, blame it on @CherylDeFranceschi who brought this book to my attention. Lost in the Barrens is pure nostalgia for me as my grade 4 teacher read it out loud to our class. I'm sure only the 🇨🇦 's on Litsy will recognize THIS oldie. 😉

Jenshootsweddings Oooooh, I do! 7y
CherylDeFranceschi ❤❤❤- Its beautiful!!!!- does it have the dreamy author photo on the back, too? 7y
LeahBergen @Jenshootsweddings I thought you might! 👏🏻👏🏻 7y

ValerieAndBooks I have been keeping my eyes open for The Rachel Papers for my #birthdaychallenge! I think it's from 1973. Do you think you'll read it soon? 7y
LeahBergen @Bradleygirl Oh! Is that the US or UK title? 7y
LeahBergen @ValerieAndBooks I hope to! I've been keeping an eye out at my used bookstores for it for months (I prefer to not buy brand new when it comes to older books 😀) 7y
